Kukri

1. The Khukuri business is a VERY competative business, therefore so many make such big claims. Please beware that Khukuris are sold with a lot of hype, and myths.

2. Many has supplied Khukuris for the Gurkhas, for the moment the supplier to the british I believe is TBK & Sons Khukuri. Heard of it? I pretty much never have. :D The BSI is not the best in anyway, some even consider it straight out bad. But its rather common, when people have a Khukuri its not to unusual to be a BSI, and many are very satisfied with it. Its readily available and ok, but there are better ones out there, depending on needs. They are in general water quenched, while more and more do oil quenching. The offical supplier part is of course fun if you think of the saying "Dont forget your rifle was made from the lowest bidder". ;)

3. I had a BSI from KH many years ago, it had a warped blade. If you just want to have one and dont care that much about official supplier etc you could just buy from anyone of the bigger companies. For more info about the Mark 5/BSI https://kilatools.com/kukrihistory/20thcenturyofficialIssue/mk5.html

Yes its a lot of info, absorbing it slowly probably is the best. So many subgroups, military issued, antique, Kothimoras etc. You notice that I am old i say KhukuriHouse, that is before they started to call themself KHHI. I think if you are getting into this, having one from them the biggest most well known house makes sense. I would guess almost everyone has something of theirs, they are not my cup of tea but they are one of the big "classics". Glad you liked yours. :)

Kailash is like the new cool kids on the block, trying out new designs and materials (micarta, Kydex). Its a youthfull playfull company that makes custom stuff, thats their thing. Good in communication and customer service. I have had a few from them, they reply fast and are in general helpful. For some they may be percieved as to modern. Karda and Chakmak only supplied upon request. A modern take on the Khukuri. Sad they werent able to contact you in time. I understand your dissapointment. I have on occasion not put in an order at all because a manufacturer was so difficult getting in contact with (not KB).

Please beware of a seller called Heritage Nepal, similar to Heritage Knives (HK). While KB started around 2015 HK begun in 2018 I think. I would say that when it comes to knowledge about Gurkhas and Khukuris, they are hard to beat. Not as wild as the former, they try and balance tradition with modern inovation (ex oil quench and perhaps longer handles then originals), but you wont find Kydex here. Historical blades that works as tools, thats their thing. If you feel tradition is not your thing you could still use them for researching the subject. Has links to information from John Powell amongst others.

Both these companies also seem to have a social focus on improving working conditions for the blacksmiths, see KB homepage why "Kami" shouldnt be used. The "K" word.
