Hi all,
I am looking to get my first Kukri for a survival pack. I would like something very rugged that could handle all sorts of abuse at a reasonable price. From what I have read "villager" models may be exactly what I am looking for. Ideally the blade would be 10+ inches, and weight in the 1.5 - 2.5 lb range, preferring heavy to lighter seeing this will also be taking place of a hatchet/axe. I know everyone here loves Himalayan Imports and I would be foolish to ignore all the recommendations, but I don't see any villager models available and the least expensive model that fits my criteria is the 15" Ang Khola. Ideally I would git either the 18" Ang Khola or the Chiruwa Ang Khola. I am sure these are the best Kukri that money can buy; unfortunately they are a little out of my price range. If I was using it every day or even considered myself a hard-core camper I might be able to justify it.
So I shopped around and found khukuriblades.com.
The most likely candidates:
The Great Panawal (10" blade, 1.75 - 2 lbs Hi carbon tempered steel blade, steel hardness- spine=22-25 RC, belly=45-46 RC, edge=54-55 RC, water buffalo leather scabbard, indian rose wood handle, 1 x small knife, 1 x sharpner):
Panawal Black (Raw) (10" blade, 1.75 - 2 lbs Hi carbon tempered steel blade, Steel hardness-spine=25 RC, belly=46 RC, edge=55 RC, buffalo leather scabbard, indian rosewood handle, 1 x small knife, 1 x sharpner):
The largest, heaviest, most expensive Kukri I am looking at:
Angkhola Supreme (13" blade, 4.4 lbs [I believe that is shipping weight] Hi carbon tempered steel blade, Steel hardness-spine=25 RC, belly=46 RC, edge=55 RC, buffalo leather scabbard, Indian rose handle):
I have looked at previous posts and seen mixed reviews on khukuriblades.com and most of them were quite old (2007 or so). Has anyone had recent dealings with this company? If so how is the quality of their products? Does anyone have experience with the models above, and if so what do you think of them? Any feedback related to this company and/or its products would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Sam
