I had a wonderfully pleasant surprise Friday. My steel mounted Kumar karda was waiting for my. I tore open the box and was loving it from the first. I honed it up a little to razor sharpness, hairless arms now, and started roughing out some blanks for future wood carvings. It is too big for detail but worked great for rough carving. I can't wait to take it camping this year. It is going to replace my old trusy Camillus marine combat knife. I think I might have to get one of those JKM knives to complement it. Do you have any in stock Uncle Bill?

I love my kumar karda. It travels with me everywhere. I think that I might have to get the JKM-1 also. You can never have to many sharp shiny things.

Has anyone done something to protect the pouch sheath from the blade's edge cutting through it when taking out or reinserting? Seems like a little piece of sheet brass folded into an inverted u shape, then bent into a v slipped over the leather inside and out where the edge slices would 1) hold the soft leather top of the sheath in a v away from the edge instead of having to pinch the leather to keep from cutting it, and 2) if the edge did touch the sheath prevent slicing the leather.

I love the one's I have as well from the 1st style to the next, one of these days I may get one with the habaki bolster.

The JKM-1's are nice little knives and with a little work can be sharpened to a single bevel edge.
I done mine that way with a medium size EZ-LAP and my DMT Diafolds.
Now ya wanna talk Sharp!??!?!?!?!!

Bro with the demand for khukuris alone the kamis are having hard times keeping up it seems.
Perhaps Gelbu could try out a new kami on the Kumar Karda's and the JKM-1's like Sher was put to making all those little kagas katne's when he was first hired?

Sometimes I think we forumites forget that we're not your only customers and we want all and everything Birghorka can make for ourselves.

I had a Kumar Karda and really liked it except for one thing and finally decided to trade it in for a villager. It was a tough decision until I received the villager

The thing I didn't like was the handle. With a normal khuk, the weight of the knife and the fact that it is used for chopping makes it feel very secure, but that type of handle with a 5-7 inch blade made me feel like my hand was going to slip foward onto the blade.

If HI were ever to come out with a different handle on their Kumar Kardas, I would be very interested. (Maybe one that has a bulge in the middle of the handle).

Gelbu is on a kami search right now -- going to several villages to see if he can recruit a couple of good ones.

There was some problem on the farm at Sher's folks and he had to go back and help. He will inherit the farm so he has a vested interest. I think Kumar also went to help so there's a big loss of manpower. And, Murali, came down with tuberculosis and can't work. Result, Bura, Sanu and Kesar have been working overtime and just can't take up any slack. Durba is a big help now but BirGorkha needs a couple more master kamis. They have 17 people which includes 4 sarkis but most of these are apprentices. We need at least a half dozen master kamis but I'm sure Gelbu will round up a couple or three.

TB?!

Let's hope Murali recovers ok. From what I've read, TB is a very serious problem in Nepal, with estimates of up to 10% of the population being infected.

Dayum,but that's not good!!
I had thought that TB like smallpox had pretty well been eradicated.
Hasn't there been some kind of a united effort by UNESCO or anyone to help with the TB problem? Or does UNESCO do those kinds of things?
Seems that there was one united org. that did though.

And it's good that Gelbu's out looking for some more master kamis.
That shouldn't be too hard since every kami in Nepal claims to be the best don't they Bro.?

On the serious side though it still shouldn't be too difficult to find some master kamis from some of the village models we have gotten lately. They have been really nice for village models.
I love the little BAS I got recently and the leather on the scabbard is wonderfully grained as well as the scabbard being excellent!!!!
If the kami made this scabbard then he is one dayumed good sarki as well as a kami!!!!

Bro, I seriously doubt the village kami made those scabbards. They are too well done for a kami who is used to the hammer rather than the needle. I told Gelbu to find out who this sarki is and hire him! He's very good.

The village kamis are good but it takes them awhile to adjust to producing HI models which must not only be strong but beautiful. Village kamis think that extra work for beauty is wasted effort -- and in a way they are right. We probably spend as time finishing the knife as we do making it.

Bill,

Is there a thread that lists the curent offerengs for HI? A lot of stuff, like the JKM-1, are bandied around, but new comers like me don't know what they look like or how much they cost. Sorta like the YCS, which I know is on the HI Website, but doesn't have a price. Most of the other prices I can get from your brochure and the Savemore site.

Speaking of Khardas, the two 30 inch Kobras I acquired came with a set that are just dying to made into belt knives, a la Puukko. Since I bought the Khukuris without scabbards, I've been playing around with the accessories. I think the Chakmas are just dandy pry bars, and the Khardas take a very nice razor edged!
