20" Kumar Kobra equals great Out Of Box experience!!
Well, I felt like a kid in a candy store when my wife brought the long brown
box home from her office. Trembling hands ripped open the packaging to
reveal this wonderful new khuk.
First impressions were highly favorable: fit and finish were to a very high
standard, all the grind lines were straight and the blade is 100% in line
with the handle. Scabbard is excellent and the frog is servicable, though
like many other customers I look forward to retrofitting the new super frogs
when they arrive. As I purchased this as a martial arts blade /
gremlin-scarer I tried it with some single stick escrima drills. The Kobra
felt almost alive in my hand! The neutral balance combined with low overall
weight make for a blade that is VERY quick and VERY controllable. The blade
tip has an uncanny way of arriving at point of aim well before you think it
will. Going through drills with the Kobra were as effortless as using a
rattan stick.
Twenty minutes work with a fine DMT and chokma created a shiveringly sharp
edge that easily lifts hair from my arm (there was a lot more "drag" on the
last 2" of the tip than the rest of the blade indicating a much softer
temper than the rest of the edge, this is not a problem for me though as I
dont plan on punching it through any 55 gallon steel drums - thats what Ang
Kholas are for!
).Time to put the blade to work, fifty chops into a
hardwood log had no decernable effect on the edge, and repeatedly slapping
the flat against the side of the log revealed no loosening of the handle or
the butt cap. A bend test allowed a 5 degree bend with the blade returning
to true.
To summarise:
Fit and finish - 9.5 out of 10
Suitability of purpose - 24 out of 10
Edge retention - 10 out of 10
Ease of sharpening - 9 out of 10
General satisfaction - 12.7 out of 10!!
As a martial arts blade it is highly recommended, though if you want a wood
splitter or nail cutter get a 15" or 18" AK. The Kobra will live on my
bedpost next to my faithful Browning HP (I am an old fashioned single action
kind of a guy). Anyone wanting a top quality martial arts blade would be
very happy with one of these!
