i just received my new kumo and noticed the sheath is different from the pictures on many websites. on mine the top of the sheath does not quite reach the handle. it does not hold the knife well at all. kind of a friction fit but no way will it stay inverted. i dont think it will retain well even handle up. i really like the knife and would like to carry it . did i get an odd sheath? also the only peice of paperwork in the box was a paper describing the tek lok.

The KUMO was a bitter disappointment for me when I got one over a year ago. The handle was one I would have expected from a dime store knife. Also I agree with the good brother that the sheath also had a lot to be desired as well. >> and keep in mind that this comment is coming from one of Spyderco's biggest fans on the planet.

I would love to see this Kumo model go back to the drawing board. I would love a Micarta handle similar to the Bob Lum FB-03 fixed blade model and a Mike Sastre sheath to go with it. The blade design wasn't bad at all. AS a matter of fact I have toyed with the idea of getting one and customizing it in my spare time.

I want this to be registered as constructive criticism and not to be taken as a "slam". I just think that the Kumo should have been delivered in a completely different format. I would also love to see the FB-03 Lum fixed blade in VG-10 blade steel and I would also love to see the fixed blade Temperance with a G-10 handle. Great knives but they just need to be tweaked and modified.

The photo used on the sites may be a stock one they got when the knife was first announced and could fall under the caveat of it being a prototype shown and not the final production version. It's also possible your particular sheath was misshapen.

Most comments I've seen on the Kumo sheath have not been positive. The good news is that there are a number of sheathmakers who do great kydex work for reasonable prices, some of whom you can see on Bladeforums. If you really do like the knife I'd strongly suggest getting a good custom sheath for it because the maker can tailor it for exactly how you want to carry the knife and give the best setup.

i actually like the handle. it has as much grip as my nealy wartac. i will call spyderco tomorrow and see what they will do as this sheath is almost as secure as the cardboard sleeve.

I like handle as well. I didn't at first but after reading what the designer had to say and playing with it for a bit, I came to appreciate it more.

And maybe that's why there is hardly any mention of the Kumo.
My one problem is that the blade stock is pretty thin.
Like kitchen knife thin.
Makes me wonder why a cord wrap handle for a kitchen knife; because it's not quite a martial blade.
One word, get a Lum Tanto FB instead.

Hello, Mr. Sastre---do you need the knife to make the sheath?

I just couldn't let this pass without an "Amen!" :)

I like my Kumo(actually I have 2), I think it turned out well for the way it was designed. I would much rather try to stab my Kumo into something then the Lum Tanto. The handle on the Lum fixed blade was not for me. The handle on the Kumo feels like it was made for my hand. It grips just right. :)
Now the sheath is a different matter. The first sheaths that came out worked well. It holds the knife in place. The new sheath...ehh...it kinda holds it. Maybe it needs some magnets in it like a Pesh Kabz. If I decide to keep my second Kumo then maybe I'll invest in one of Mike's sheaths. :)

I sent away for a sheath for my kumo and after a while, Spyderco sent the knife back in the sheath. It fit beautifully and holds extremely well in any carry position.

Dave,
Welcome to Bladeforums and the Spydie Forum!! :)
Was your first sheath loose, and you sent everything in?? Knife and sheath?? Did you get a new sheath, or did they tighten yours??
Just wondering.
I am thinking about hitting mine with an iron, tighten it up a little.
