Hello dear brothers,
As i had this slick blade hanging around for some time and with God's good will i managed to finish this luxurious Kwaiken that i hope you will enjoy.
Although the knife is not meant to be a history lesson, it keeps all features of the traditional Kwaiken and is a pleasure to both watch and use.
The blade is made using 0.14" 1075 high carbon steel, it was clay hardened and hand polished for a spectacular hamon - a very difficult and time consuming process (ask mi finger tips
).
The habaki is made out of soft steel (etched) and in itself was a real nerves eater to proper fit and finish but in the end i am very happy with the result. The Tsuka has a base made of plum wood heart that is wrapped in a gorgeous piece of genuine stingray leather for both a very good grip and a luxurious look.
For the saya i used dried plum wood heart - the local ironwood - a very dense wood, with intricate grain and gorgeous colors that was finely finished.
The mekugi is made of brass; the knife can be very easily disassembled/assembled.
I do not pretend the knife is perfect by any means yet it is very well made, it looks gorgeous, feels excellent in hand and is super sharp.
OAL 8.9", blade 4.15", oal with saya 9.65"
The price for it is 280 usd.
All the best, God bless,
Bogdan
