Hello,

I'm new to kydex. Do you have any tips and tricks to forming the kydex without hurting the finish on the knife handle? My first attempt I was using Shellac, and it kind of softened and ruined the finish. After that I kind of decided I hated Shellac and will likely stick to polyurethane and Tung Oil. My next attempt may be Tung Oil. Poly is supposed to be very heat resistant so I'm not as worried. But Tung Oil breaks down at about 160 degF.

I guess the best answer would be to form the kydex before finishing the handle, but do you have any other helpful suggestions?

Thanks!

I wouldnt use shellac. As you found out it offers little if any protection. I have had good results from Birchwood Casey tru oil. let the final coat set for a week before forming your kydex and it should be hard enough to not get scratched. if it does get scratched, tru oil is easy to fix as well.

Shellac and poly just sit on top of the wood.

Use some Danish Oil or some tru oil and do not be in a hurry to get it finished, they take time to apply properly.

I use Watco Danish and TruOil on my walnut handles. I simply use a layer of blue painter's tape on the wood to protect it (the completely finished handle) during the forming process. Nothing to it.
