Kydex Forming Material

Hi. Does anyone have a source for Kydex/Concealex forming material similiar to that used in Allen Blade's Kydex video? I'm currently using multiple layers of a camping mat. This foam doesn't go back to it's original flat state, and it's awkward to work with.

The stuff Allen used looks ideal because it's thin and gives good edge definition. I believe it was refered to as an automotive rubber material of some kind.

Thanks in advance!

Hi White...

Not sure what Alen is using but I use sleeping pad foam and don't have Any problems with it at all...
I'd love to get more life out of my molds,, but I'm getting about 100 presses out of them now and that's fine for me...

That also depends on what kind of knife I'm pressing...A thick knife leaves deeper impressions and takes a little longer to come back...

I use at least 8 molds and rotate them often.

Unless you are pressing a Whack of knives,,sleeping pad foam is all you'll need...

Hey White; At a symposium I went to a while back, Greg Lightfoot told us that he uses two layers of carpet underlay with a layer of carpet over that. The carpet will be the surface pressing into the kydex.

Hello,

The stuff i use i get at a RUbber supplymanufacturing plant. Most towns have somthing like this under rubber products in the phone book. The stuff i use is black
Industrial rubber that is 3/8th thick and is at the 60 durometer level. THe pads that i have , have been in constant use for almost 4 yrs and are still working great , i guess ive probably done close to 2000 sheaths
with them so far.

regards,,,,Allen

Thanks for the replies. I'll check local sources for the rubber that Allen mentioned. The blue camping mat stuff still shows my first sheath impression from 4 days ago!

I use an industrial closed cell foam insulation called ethafoam. Might be more familiar as the foam used in archery targets. Its avaliable in diferent dencities so you can have more definition on one side of your kydex sheaths than the other if you want. I also use the same stuff for wet forming leather sheaths. Just put the knife and sheath betweened two chunks of foam, compress in the shop vise, watch half hour of sports and presto!!!!

I use the same stuff Blade Tech uses.. Victor Kelly set me up with a big piece of it and I keep cutting into appropriate sizes. Its a very dense gray foam material and works MUCH better than closed cell/mattress stuff in my opinion. I hear Victor is on a leave of absence, but if you call them you should be able to get hold of some. Try asking for Rob, he is the guy I talked to the other day, and was very helpfull... Hope this helps.
