Hey guys, got some kydex questions.

I'm going to make me a kydex press and wanted to know what foam to get I see there are a few different types on some of the knife supply websites and don't have a clue on what the difference is.

Also what is the common eyelet size everyone uses for sheaths, I see there are 3/16 and 1/4. I'm going to get flaring dies too and really only want to order one size.

Thanks
Justin

The cheapest foam is the blue sleeping pad foam at walmart
It takes a set, but you can reuse it if you are doing the same knife and use new sections for new designs
There is a lot of material in a roll

The better foams are
I found as a thicker kneeling pad foam black
I think the knife suppliers are selling that now.
It's thicker more resilient and comes back better.

I like the 1/4"
It's easier to put hardware through

I use a 1 inch thick foam that I got from a knife supply but I don't remember which one. I also use 1/4 eyelets.

Get the best Foam you can afford. I got mine from Knifekits. I agree with the Count about the 1/4" eyelets.

My foam came from either Jantz or usaknifemaker and it seems to work well, and I also use the 1/4 rivets so I can attach my belt loops through them using Chicago screws I get from tandy leather. Knife kits flaring dies are very nice, I use the cheaper ones you hit with a hammer.

I was watching a video by Murray Carter where he was making one of the neck knives and he uses Chicago screws on the sides of the sheath because it lets hm drill the hole closer to the edge.

I use 2 memory foam bench seat pads from Walmart I believe. They are dark green and about 1 1/2" thick. Were $5 each and I've formed dozens of gun holsters with them. They work great. And for $10 out the door its not bad.
