Kydex rant

I love both kydex and leather. my only pet peeves are when makers ships kydex sheaths with split rivets (they know who they are) and leather sheaths with leather sheath with loose stichings.

I like kydex for wetter environments and user knives, and I really like the flexibility of positioning that a good kydex sheath and a tek lok give you. Leather feels classier and doesn't scratch the knife as often, but it has issues with moisture and isn't as easily mounted in different carry positions.

Who mentioned European swords?
Maybe my Prussian cavalry saber was made in China? The scabbard is made entirely from steel and not wood or leather.
Funny thing, it's much lighter than the Patton saber scabbard from the same time period.
The Patton is made from canvas wrapped wood (with metal throat and tip) which are lighter materials. However them not being as tough as steel one had to use more of it and it ended up much more voluminous and heavy.

They managed to design it in a way that the blade didn't scratch the last 100 years... But just to be careful and not mess up the edge I simply pull it while applying a little bit of pressure towards the spine.

If using a kydex sheath dulls your blade then you need a better blade.

Seriously.

I use kydex and aluminum for my Tantos and never do they dull a blade.

Amen. Kydex, on its own, doesn't dull anything, contrary to what our esteemed expert Gaston says.

The "kydex" sheaths that people complain are dulling their blade because they contact the edge are actually glass filled nylon. That will definitely dull the blade if it comes in contact with it, but it isn't kydex.

A properly made kydex sheath should only contact the handle for retention and suspend the blade inside. Shouldn't touch the edge at all.

And even if it did, it WOULD NOT dull the blade. The edge would slice the kydex. But not much.
