I want to give a shot at making a kydex sheath. I ordered the kydex sheath kit from knifekits and am looking for pointers on making a sheath. I read that i should use ridged foam on some wood to press the sheath. Does anybody know where i can buy this foam, or have some extra i can buy off of them? Thanks,
John

I am using two layers of the stuff Fred Meyer sells. It is about 1/2 or 3/4in thick per sheet. It's the shop floor matting with the puzzle peice looking cut outs to connect the squares. I use a counter top Workmate for pressing the sheaths with a couple of C clamps to press the top of the boards.

You can use just about any plyable foam, as long as it doesn't melt @ ~300* (wow is that some sort of internet smiley face?). I've even used bath towels before... not ideal, but it worked.

Does anybody know what the foam is called that I'm looking for? Just semi ridged foam? What else is it used for? I live in the middle of nowhere so I want to be able to call around before going out and looking. I have some of that egg crate foam used for beds, will that work, or is it too soft?

Go to a fabric store and ask for Upolstery foam like you would use in a car seat. it is plyable and then returns right back to shape and at a fabric store it should be relativly inexpensive.

I am about to make my first kydex sheath and was planning on using the foam from under my workout bench. Its the anti-fatigue foam frm wally world. I've heard it works well, I hope so.

You can buy the foam from knifekits.com for $8.95 a side or maybe cut it in half and make a small press?

Personally I bought two pieces, used some 1" inch plywood and a hinge at the back and use some cinder blocks for weight. Or you can stand on it :)

Hoping some of you will share pictures of your Kydex making setup's.

Very interested in seeing your most crudest set up to the all out top of the line.

What ever works, works!

Hey Guitardemon,

I want to get into Kydex...so I am not even an amateur on the subject yet. But, I believe that the foam the the professionals use to make a Kydex press is EVA Foam. Google it, eBay it, it is everywhere.
Good Luck, John
