I'd like to try my hand at this and order some kydex and fittings. One thing I cant figure out though is how do rivets work. Is there a way to use them without a press? like a die hammer and anvil type thing. Not really looking to spend +80 dollars on this.

Failing that are there alternatives? Like Chicago screws, or would that be weird.

Use the dies in a drill press if you have one.

The rivets look nicer if you use the dies but they aren't absolutely necessary but don't buy the press.

I have the punch and anvil for the 3/16 and 1/4" rivets. They work well and the finished product looks O.K. But, I plan to order the dies soon. If you know you are going to be doing a lot of Kydex I think the dies are well worth it.

Spend the $40 bucks or so on the dies. Put one of the dies in the chuck of your drill press. For the other die drill a hole in a piece of wood that is squared at 90'. You can either use it with the bottom die in a drill press vise to prevent it from moving (better when doing multiple sheaths !) or line it up and push down !

I say forget the hand method. Heck if you want a press dedicated to kydex rivets, just buy a 30 dollar arbor press at Harbor Freight.
