for kydex sheaths is it really necessary to add the rivets or eyelets to secure the sheath together or can you just use gorilla glue or super glue?

You can make a no rivet kydex sheath but use Hot blue PVC cement. The super glue and gorilla glue have not held up for me nearly as well.

I have made a number of Kydex sheaths without any form of fasteners- glue or rivets as I do not trust the glue and have no suitable rivets. All I have done is make a fold over flap on the sheath. Thus the flap holds the sheath together and you get a smooth black surface. The only negative I can see is if the sheath gets hot enough to soften the flap- but then the integrity of the sheath itself is compromised. I have used my sheaths at work for a couple of years and they work great (IMO only)

Here is an example:

Unfortunately I don't have a view of the reverse side and the knives are put out of my reach right now but I just extend one side of the sheath, sand a bevel into the inner side; press the sheath then selectively heat the tab and fold it over using the table surface and press the tab tight.
Hope this helps (P.S. Sorry for the poor first pic- hard to take pics on a bed, whilst on your knees with 2 broken legs- I'll get better ones done soon)

Use whatever works for you and will make it safe when you're wearing the knife. You definitely don't want a RAZOR sharp knife accidently popping out of the sheath. You can drill a bunch of holes towards the edge of the sheath(s) and tie together with paracord or rope or whatever your brain can think of :) There are no rules.

If you use .125 kydex You can use Chicago screws. Tandy leather has some nice blackened brass ones. I have seen people use pop rivets also.

I like this idea, You could lace up the sheath like some people do with leather sheaths.

The fold-over technique works well but is not as attractive as rivets or chicago screws. I would try Tandy leather or your local craft store for some rivets and a rivet setter. You should be able to pick these up for 3-4 dollars.

that is the great thing about opinions:)- I have had a number of people tell me that they like the simplistic look of the fold overs more than the rivets etc..
That being said I do like the look of lacing in a sheath as well.

I fold the Kydex over the knife and then drill holes and lace it up with paracord. With smaller knives, I sometimes remove the core and use smaller holes for lacing. This also decreases the overall bulkiness.
