Kydex sucks

I gotta give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he meant, "Oh. You all like kydex." How 'bout it, Tuff?

I like kydex personally.
I think it's a typo too.

I am with you... There is nothing better than wood for a sheath, and nothing better than flint for a knife blade..

Hello,

Merry Xmas to you too!!! LMAO !!

I think it might be a Typo also,, but on the slim chance it isn`t, I think his dismay with Kydex may be to his Use of Improperly
formed and finished Kydex sheaths, and if thats not the Case then he just has a dislike for Kydex. <shrug>

I mean there are still people out there who like Dead Animal Skins Treated with Acids/vegetable oils, Protecting there Blades.

Merry HO Ho!!!

Thanks ,

Allen Blade

Sheath materials, good question Tuff. We spend way too much time on blade materials and not nearly enough on sheath materials and design. So is Kydex the ideal sheath material? For me, at least, its not.

Kydex has alot going for it, but its a trade off just like everything else. Need a sheath for a field knife to use under damp conditions? Kydex would be hard to beat. But, for a truely attractive sheath you going to have a hard time topping some of the very excellent leather sheaths that are being produced, unless of course you are lucky enough to get a finely worked metal sheath.

Kydex doesn't "suck", its good under damp conditions, and many of the kydex sheaths on the market secure the knife vey well without the clumsy latching mechanisims found on alot of leather sheaths. Its also a though material, and in well constructive sheaths it will provided a high degree of protection - which is exactly what we want for a carry knife. On the downside it tend to scratch up the surface of the blade; can be noisy in the field, and is probably subject to UV degregation.

Huh? I am working my way towards 100% kydex for all my guns and knives, it has made all the other stuff seem worthless.

Hello,

There is also the Blade protection Factor, both Kydex and Consealex offer this.

it also is a great material on a big knife for if your Clumsy like i am and fall down alot in the woods,to Protect your Lower Limbs from suddenly becoming Punctured, when your knife pokes its Tip through the Leather.
(ouch)!! Its also good because it doesnt need
any external Treatments, bees wax,, neatfoot oil,,Ect,,ect, to Protect the material and to keep it supple.

it also is much more Cost effective to the protection it offer`s, to construct than anything else.

it has no Absorbancy Rate so you dont have to Walk around carrying you Knife, while your leather , or Wood sheath Dries out.

It also can Be washed and Drip dried or Blown out when it becomes dirty, Even in the field no less!!

The material is More Cost effective to the benifits gained.

You dont have to buy expensive Stitching Equipment to use it, or waste money having somone else sew them.

You can paint Happy Daiseys or Smiley Faces on Kydex with Testors Model paint if you wish to Add ART..........LMFAO

Or even Glu Various grades of Varmit skins or Reptile skins to Kydex if you really want to
(although i find this silly) i mean isnt that why you use kydex in the first place, to not use said Glued on materials.

you Can Even use KYDEX/ Consealex Sheath bodys as SPlints in the field for Broken body parts(Depending on sheath size of course).

I also use my kydex/consealex sheath`s(because i form them this way) as Training Aids, by taking of the screw post attached Belt loop and since it is a Snap on retention, use the Body of the Sheath as a protective blade covering, so i can use my live blade and the handle i am use to Grabbing, in Knife Offence and defensive drills, without having to waste money on a trainer knife(what a concept)!!

its also quite Un-noisy in the woodline ,,or should i say it will be when i get my little experiment done im working on(stay tuned)!! and no im not going to Glu anything to it....Lmao

its also leaps and Bounds more Resistant to Chemicals, solvents, acids,,, bacterial, Viral, and other Agents than anything else is. Consealex excluded as it exibits the same Resistance.

It also is Multi enviromental in its applications, from Diving to Jungle to Desert, to humid, to extreme cold climates.

and on and on and on!!!

my opinion only of course,

Merry Xmas,

Allen blade

for utility and user knives, kydex is tops. but if you want something to look good, you'd better go with leather. while i love G-10 and beadblast finishes, they will never look as nice as ivory and leather.

I was just thinking. Where else in the whole World Wide Web, could two words, "Kydex Sucks!" attract so many peoples attention and time?
Good thread Tuff, give the people what they want. We call non- knifenuts sheeple? Bah!

Allen Blade is on to something here.

Lizard skin glued on to a Kydex sheath! This could be a whole new market niche!

Whose going to jump on this and make a killing?

Self improvement is a hobby of mine :).

There are two kinds of kydex apparell I've liked.

One is dyed black ray skin. Great way to sheath a tanto or other Japanese inspired knife. Then there is carbon fiber panels. Like what Benchmade did with late model Nimvarusus (or whatever is Nimvarus plural).

YOU all like Kydex, not YOUR

typo indeed....SORRY ABOUT THAT.

Glad I read this before going anywhere this weekend...lol

LOL

that is funny, didn't even notice it when I posted. That damn "R" key always pushes itself down when I'm not looking...

I think I'm the only person up here who would pass on Kydex if an alternate was offered. Just a personal preference thing I guess.

Also, I'll sometimes stick a knife in the back of my pants in the back if I don't have a belt, and Kydex can be really, really uncomfortable in that instance
