Take care,

And Blade Forum members , remember SUpport KYDEX/Consealex Not
AL GORE !!! And when you think of Leather or wood sheath`s think of JANET RENO in a thong, and the Visual will act as a conversion aid!!!.........Lmao

I hate Kydex - I think Leather is what God intended men to carry iron with.
this goes for Pistols, Knives, even your claw hammer.

I mean, if I went around saying I was an Emperor because some
moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, people would put me away!

I know their isn't many people spending much time on horse back these days, but for those who do, kydex gives a much safer carry for those who think they must carry a fixed blade while horse back.

I am basically a wood and leather kind of guy, but always carried folders while on a horse. The idea of a twelve hundred plus pound horse on top of me and my leather covered knife was never an appealing thought.

Thanks Tuff, now I can reply with out fear of feeding the trolls!!

Kydex is definetly not the choice for every application and do not believe anyone ever intended it to be. The thing is, Kydex can not be denied the place it has taken in the cutlery world. A few testimonies to its impact are that; One, it is popular enough for another company to copy its properties and sustain a competitive material in the market (concealex). Two, Kydex is building atleast to major manufacturers of products made form it (Edge Works and Blade-Tech). Three, people are reading this thread!!

The logical conclusion to me is to ask what the big deal is and see if there is an application that I am missing out on. I think instead of "kydex sucks" you should say "kydex sucks for somethings" or maybe "change sucks".

yeah, I just went right for the throat on this one. I'll remember that though.

Hey, Ogre doesn't like Kydex, I'm not alone!

I like everything about my kydex sheaths, EXCEPT for any blade that has a coating that I in any way care about how it looks. If you get any kind of grit in your sheath, and put your knife back (or take it out again)...SCRATCH. My REKAT Hobbit Warrior is scratched to s#%*, some from use, but mostly from the kydex sheath. I like to use it, but I also care about the appearance, because it is such a cool-looking knife.

Hello,

Ok Ok i will admit i wouldnt Put a BUSTER WARENSKI art Dagger in a KYDEX sheath, on the other hand wait a minute, those are shiney arent they?? 5 minutes in my Bead Blaster and then i will put it in a kydex sheath..........LMAO

I Think it really gets down to a Performance level and what kind of knives as a maker, that you manufacture. myself i dont make art knives or Light reflectors anymore, so i dont worry about it. im more into the
Rugged use Finishes that are easy to replace and redo. but thats just me.

I'm with Allen on this one. Kydex may not be perfect, but I sure love it. I used to use leather for everything. Could never display it with my knives at shows. People would put the knife in wrong, and it would go right through the sheath. With Kydex I have no fear of that happening. People still sometime try and put them in wrong, but the Kydex won't let them. Leather is pretty, but Kydex is just plain cool, not to mention safer, stronger, more durable.

I agree that knives with coatings don't go well with kydex sheaths. Though I've never had any problems with the kydex sheath on my sealpup, I still prefer the old nylon version because it slides in and out easier, with minimal posibility of scratching.

I have not a single kydex sheat so my opinions are feeble.
My thesis against kydex:
Leather absorbs oil from blades and later a leather sheat actually oils your blades.

Most cool knives come with a leather sheat: Randalls, CRKs one piece line... Most uncool thought: kydex neck sheat for sebenza.

And one question:
How does kydex stand cold? A leather sheat works well in -40C. Plastics tend to harden in cold and snap when bend. Not a feature I want to my sheats.

I don't like having kydex on my Blackwind katana, but surprisingly, it hasn't messed up the coating that match. Not sure why, though.

Have read all the threads. I'm with Ogre and Tuff, I'll take leather. It has its draw backs but when properly applied, it has a warm look, enhances the blade and flat looks good. Haven't quite gotten used to wrappin' plastic around my blades yet. I guess when I can't get leather anymore I'll have to kill me some vinyls to make do.

I will take Leather any day over Kydex Leather worn in a horizontal sheath and form fitted to a good knife good 9 oz leather about 1/2 inch thick at the seem's ANY DAY

Hello,

i have had no problems whatsoever in extreme cold with either kydex or Consealex,

Now dont get me wrong ,,i liked leather to and used it when i was just starting to make knives. but its propertys just dont add up to the performance level that kydex or Consealex offer. In the Kind of knives i make the last thing i need is a Leather sheath to fail out in the Field when somone needs it to carry there blade around.

A properly designed leather sheath will not let the knife cut its way out of it, and can easily incorporate retention if desired, too.

I do not, however, think kydex sucks.

I have heard a couple people say, in effect,

Kydex scratches the blade but, ya know that xyz blade doesn't seem to get scratched by its sheath??

Allen has said before, and I know other makers who will testify to this, that a PROPERLY DESIGNED SHEATH WILL ELIMINATE OR REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF BLADE WEAR. There are a lot of examples of this on the market.
Some of the run of the mill, fold over sheaths, were formed to the knife in a manner that will cause this wear. Taking the time to form a "cavity pattern" and calculating the lock up points, ala the Seal Pup, will reduce these effects. I know makers who will do this for small run or single piece customs. Alot of work but worth the results.

Kydex sheaths are good, good kydex sheaths are better.

Kydex by any other name is just plastic. I'll rather have a injection molded sheath such as the Buck M9/Buckmaster sheath than some of the riveted stuff makers are pushing today.

I asked Gary Randall a few weeks ago if he had considered Kydex sheaths over at Randall Knives and he told me that they had decided to stay with leather because the kydex sheaths tended to have a shorter life expectancy (hhmmm I do own many 70+ year old military knives with their original leather sheaths - maybe there is something to this??)

By the way, a Randall Mod. 14, or 18, in a M9 sheath looks very cool (they are a perfect fit)

Another gripe with Kydex is that it freezes and breaks. The sheath to a Ka-Bar next generation of a friend of mine, broke off after 4 hr exposure to what he said was around between -12 and -18 fairinheit roughly. I think it should be able to handle cold better than that...

Kydex is better for some applications...
Leather is better for others...

but when you really wan to go all out...

nothing beats a hot cup of coffee for concealment of a weapon.
