Kydex vs Leather

Chiro....

Are you sure you mean 1/4" and 1/2"...

Umm correct me if I'm wrong,, but I don't think it comes in that thickness....

If it does,, Damn,,thats thick stuff.. May be better suited for lining pickup trucks and bullet proof vests rather that knife sheaths...

Not trying to be smart or anything,, I think,,you might be confusing the numbers a little....

Concealex comes in .060, .080,.090, .125,, far from 1/4 and 1/2"...

I don't know I could be wrong...
just doesn't seem right to me...

Chiro is right. They do make thick Kydex. But, man, that'd be soem prety thick stuff to make a sheath out of! i like my .060" Concealex for little knives, and .080-.090 for big stuff. That's plenty thick!

Hey Chris....

WoW,, 1/4 inch seems Way To Thick for anything I would have a use for...

I have it in 1/8,, and believe me,, that is plenty thick for ANYTHING we would use it for.

On the leather sheaths that I make I use a product called Snow Seal. It is a wax based product for the x-country ski industry. Mink oil or Neats Foot oil can/will cause leather to stretch - very bad when talking about skiing shoes, cowboy boots and yes, knife sheaths intended to hold blades by friction. Once treated, leather becomes almost impervious to water. Not that there is any rainforest around me to test this on but for leather intended to be kept close to the body this is the best way to treat it. And that goes for sheaths, shoes, gloves or what ever. (Snow seal on goat skin work gloves will increase the wear life of the glove, improve your grip while wearing them and pull the skin off someones face if you punch them.) For close to the body use there really isn't any comparison between leather and Kydex as far as comfort is concerned and that is very important consideration when you are talking about hiding something on your person and appearing natural. Oh well thats my two cents. Aloha

Yes, Normark, I am SURE it is 1/4" thick and I think I have a sample of 1/2" thick, too. Remember, however, that while Concealex is made specifically for firearms and knives, and therefore comes in limited thicknesses for said applications, Kydex is made by Kleerdex for a ton of applications, and I'm sure sheaths and holsters weren't even on their list. You can see Kleerdex's site to see what thicknesses it comes in. Follow this link then click on "Specifications" and then "Dimensions". You'll see all the thicknesses they offer. Like I said, I have just enough to do a small knife in half-inch thickness. It's white Kydex, though!

HALF INCH THICK!
What the heck are you trying to sheath there buster! must be one mean sharp thing, that seems like a real overkill thickness for a sheath. I've made some welts thicker than that, to allow room for a thick handle, but not the overall piece of leather, wow, forget the knife, just whack em' with the sheath!
