KZII Stripping (Satin advice request!)

I find the only Busses that look "good" under the coating are the FFG. The convex grind ones you'll often notice A LOT of dimpling. I've spent six hours on a belt sander grinding out dimples on an NMFBM, before even hitting finishing belts. Granted that was before I started using ceramic belts.

If you want the dimples gone, you need to grind them out. I can't imagine hand sanding past them on hardened steel. All the scotchbrite wheels are going to do it create a downward tight scratch pattern, but it won't look "satin" until the pitting is gone on the steel.

Nice work though, it sure is a lot of effort.

Yeah, I've pretty much resigned myself to it needing to be run on a belt sander. Boxing it up to ship it off to someone who's gonna work it for me... definitely going to have to just put the money down on a good belt sander for myself if I'm gonna tinker with bigger blades.

Well, I think I've gone about as far as I can by hand. I'm going to have to enlist the help of someone else or invest in a belt sander to get it any farther I think... spent the entire day working on it. The pictures don't make it look too bad, but there's a lot of flaws I want worked out... there's a whole line of dimples that were hidden by the decarb in lines from the machining and/or rolling of the steel.

:eek::thumbup:

I do have a belt grinder, and my ghetto satin doesn't look that good. Must be because I'm lazy. :rolleyes:
