L.L. Bean Woodsman 102

I wonder what the synthetic laminate is. If it is stacked micarta disks it might offer the esthetic of stacked leather and the durability and moisture resistance of micarta. If it had the fiber of micarta it might not be bad.

Jim, that's the way I'm understanding the description...I was interested in the 105 and almost pulled the trigger.

Goose, let us know when you get yours:D. Preston

well, how the heck am I supposed to know the diff?

How about some nice pictures by Goose when you receive it!

It wont smell like leather if its synthetic :D (sorry) Just kiddin by the way LOL

In their pics it looks really neat!

Edited: I posted too slow! Nice job pjsjr

I think it's a leather handle on the 105 and the description is erroneous. It also says that it comes with a black leather sheath, contrary to the picture. The handle on the 105 looks identical to the Woodsman in the pictures, to me anyway.

It'll be interesting to find out the verdict once Mr. Goose's beagle has analyzed it. :D

The 105 description is a mis-print. I called L.L. Bean and talked to someone who was actually holding the knife.

LOL Preston....
You guys have had me smelling brass and nickel bolsters, sheaths, and I was wondering if "smell" was gonna be the "tip" to determine the handle material.
Waiting for someone to tell me to check my 9-volt battery for power by putting the contacts on my tongue.
I think the Beagle Test would've been the definitive answer...but a pissed of Goose means a beagle in time-out.
The Bean 105 should be here Monday.

Goose, I'll wait to order until you have the knife in hand and can say what that handle material is:D. Preston

We also need a full Goose report on what you think of the knife. I may purchase one.

Full report to follow in another post.

The 105 was beagle tested...as soon as I took it out of the box along with the sheath, the dawg went for the handle. Has never done that before...usually goes for the sheath.

Don't care for the etch...which, BTW, is not shown on-line on the Bean site.

They did throw in a little B425.
Shown here; 119BR (my favorite fixed), 105LL, 425, and 102BR.

Not certain why the pic looks foggy...maybe I'll re-do

Mr P and TAH...
I wouldn't have gotten it if I'd known it was etched. The sheath is also stamped "L.L. Bean" and is shown as such on their site. The etch stuff, I just don't like. The 110AG from Cabela's doesn't bug me, the "Pro-Line" from Bass Pro is okay, but this "L.L. Bean"??? Well...too preppy/yuppy for me. I would get thrown out of any reindeer games sporting that logo.
Oh well...I must suffer so that others may learn.

Overall, I do like the 105 better than the 102. But, not as much as the 119. The 105 taper/curve on the spine as it goes to the point, I like that...but it's still too small for my liking in general.

The 119 is better for me as a EDC.
The 105 would be great for small game dressing or carving up a cornish game hen.
The 112 would be good if I was to grill up a squirrel or guinea pig.

So, the 105 will find its' way back to the box and go in the closet...so I won't be reporting on cutting or use. No sense my using it.

BTW, the handle seems to be genuine leather.

Goose,

Why not just send it back to Bean? Do you think the logo could be easily removed?

I'd rather keep it as I didn't have a 105. Even w/o the logo I prob wouldn't use it TAH. Just not "me". It's the whole Ginger/Mary Ann, Betty/Wilma, Fabio/Goose choice thing.
Your mileage may vary.

Wish they had a 119 with that handle. I'd napalm off that logo and use it as EDC instead of the 119BR I use now.

Well, if you're asking it would be:

1) Mary Ann
2) Betty
3) Is there a third choice? :(

Goose, since LL didn't work for me, this is what I'm thinking of having Santa or one of his elves(me) bring me for being such a good boy this year:rolleyes: ;) .

I've had one for many years(really my first Buck) and it always goes on the hunting trips. It does yeoman like work whenever called upon and I like it's blade shape.

I'll not be using it but some of it's brothers and cousins are getting lonely:D. Preston

I just saved you five bucks for your Buck Mr. P.
You owe me a Bud Lite and a Big Mac...

I'm thinking that I have been a good guy this year, don't you? Maybe Santa will whisper to me to pull the trigger on one too.

But, after looking at the 102 and 105, I'm thinking 4 and a half inches is too small...dunno....hmmm...decisions, decisions...

Thanks, Goose, after years of using my 118, many deer and a few elk, fish and birds it is a real work horse.

I say that because anything else in my hand feels wierd, even the 103 for skinning. I go back to the 118, after awhile.

It says 41/2" blade but the curve seems to make it behave like a large/longer blade. Like many things, it's what your use to.

Look forward to buying you the BL & BM:D. Preston
