L6 Bowie WIP

Yes, yes I know Chad. This was taken at the same time as the chopper I'm working on. Trust me, you will never see my feet again.

Quick update. The handle scales are glued up and drying. Holes will be drilled and I will start shaping the handle soon. Keep your fingers crossed!

looks great calvin. Ive got to be the odd one, cause I like the guard. used to dislike guards, but after way too many close calls, started making them and havent looked back. I also like the polished bevels on the rough blade. it looks good, and should cut deeper, and you get the old look at the same time.

I feel much the same way Joe. I cut my right hand really bad one time on a knife that had no guard. Since then I've been kinda paranoid. Different strokes for different folks though. I really appreciate the kind words too. It helps with the motivation ya know?

i never got cut too bad on a knife with no guard, but it onlly takes once. and I tell you, if youve ever been elbow deep gutting an elk with the snow coming down heavier and heavier, cant see too well, cause the snows in your eyes, and so cold that your hands are past numb, and you reaslize that you are still 5 miles from camp, that is when you really, really like that little piece of brass protecting your fingers.

Calvin,
Can you post an introductory paragraph describing the WIP. I will move it to the BBQ sticky.

It should be in this format:

Your forum name
The WIP name and type
Brief description of project

Recurve Hunter - Weekend Project
This is a build WIP on making a recurve hunter in L-6 and fitting a stag crown handle. It will cover the HT I use for L-6 as well as how I carve the Stag Crown.

Here's a pic of the handle scales glued up and drilled. I moved my work bench to my house so I don't have to drive 35 minutes to my parents place to work. The only problem is that I now have to purchase a new vise:mad:. Mine has apparently shot craps. I'll post some more pics when I get my vise and get some more done.

I apologize for not having anything to post on this for awhile. I was hoping to finish it last week, but threw my back out and was pretty much bed ridden for a lot of the week. Hopefully I will get to finish it up this week and post pics either Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for baring with me guys.

Man, I love the look of this knife, with the blade polished partly like that. Awesome work, really can't wait to see this thing finished!
Hope you feel better with your back and all........hope you got that heating pad out.

Thanks a lot Dave! I have found that a high polish like this not only looks nice but it also seems to allow the knife to glide through the cut. I was going to keep this one, but I've got a very close friend who is going through a very tough time right now. He's a former USMC scout sniper, and Marine Force Recon. He has been and done, as they say. I thought he might appreciate having a weapon like this that has been made by a friend.

Okay, I got some work done tonight, back pain be damned. I got the scales profiled and started shaping one side. I left my scrollsaw at my parents place, and missed it greatly tonight. Nothing quite like three hours of rasping:thumbdn:

I'm still short a vise, so I have decided to make do. This arrangement is far from ideal, but what ya gonna do?/

Here I am with my trusty Nicholson 4in1 rasp. I was just starting to profile the scales at this point. I like to take it kinda slow when I get down close to the spine just so I don't gouge it badly. People have asked me why I don't cut the scales to profile before I even glue them on. My reply? Cuz I suck with a scroll saw. I like the fit that I get out of this way of doing it as well.

Here the handle is all profiled and partially shaped. The shape has a long way to go yet. As I said in my last post, this is going to a very special friend, so I want it to be the absolute best that I can make it. If that means that I take my sweet time with it, so be it.

Here's a quick view from the spine of the knife to show the shape of the handle. It's just starting to come around. I really am looking forward to seeing just how this turns out. Stay tuned!!

I've found any stabilized wood just destroys my scroll saw blades (before I had a metal bandsaw). Probably wasn't using the right blades on it anyhow...

Looks great man! Sorry to hear about the back... hope it heals up soon!

Thanks Jonathan! Fortunately this wood is unstabilized, or unfortunately, however you wanna look at it. It cuts very nicely but like I said, I suck with a scroll saw. I hoping to have it all buttoned up no later than this weekend. Then I get to start on some new stuff!!!

I like the knife Calvin. The only thing I wonder about, like others, is the guard. Not that it would not work but it only seems crudely shaped compared to the rest of the knife. Maybe give it a little more shape? If it wasn't harden I would have said maybe some kind of cut-out to fancy it up and blend it more with the refinement of the overall knife? Looking forward to what you come up with.

I appreciate the Patrice. I actually did that for a reason. It acts as an area of leverage when you place your finger in the generous choil. I also designed it like that because I initially wanted to use it for a hog knife. I definitely didn't want to have my hand slide up the blade. If you had an idea as to how I might change it, I would gladly welcome any advice.

I was going to post a bunch of stuff but my laptop just freaked out and erased my whole post. I'm kinda pissed so I'm just going to post a pic and I'll repost tomorrow.
I reshaped the guard after a conversation with Mr. Lemee. I agreed with him, it looked crude.

Tomorrow I'll post about my hand sanding process. I dont use stabilized woods, so its a little different.

I love how you did not take too much off. Still kept the size you were after but the guard now has some character of its own to match the blade and handle. Looking forward to seeing it finished.
