La Griffe vs HideAwayKnife

I have had both and got rid of both. Bought the Brous and have been well pleased. The plain jane HAK I owned was way overpriced for what it was not to mention the fact it took over 6 months just to get one of their "standard" models. Ordered some extra sheaths and such with it that 3 years later I have never gotten. Emerson was ok, but poorly finished and not the most user friendly to sharpen. I wouldnt depend on any of the 3 to save my life, but they may give you time to draw another, more capable weapon.

100eyes, I have no further desire to debate your opinion or my own. Nor do I care to defend what knives I've owned. -Do as you like.

I also find curved (and recurved) blades to be a huge PITA to sharpen, but the laGriffe isn't intended as a utility knife, it's really specialized as a small hideout weapon for close quarters mayhem. Really how often would someone find themselves in this sort of situation that they need to sharpen it? I doubt even the most hardcore cops or undercover operatives cut
themselves out of a bad situation that often. Use your blades how you want, but if you use it for cutting string and boxes everyday yes it will dull and sharpening will be a hassle--why not use a SAK or myriad other knives for that sort of use?

another consideration for the OP is Raid Ops, they make a model with similar design to the HAK and a couple other models similar to the La Griffe.

you have to contact the owner Kim to get price quotes, but the fit and finish on both their knives and kydex is superb.

he used to work with S30V almost exclusively, but now I see it's a mix of D2 and M2 from Bohler and Hitachi

I own a custom LaGriffe (2.5-3" - the original length Perrin chose) and also had one of the fitted HAKs, each from several years back. I prefer the Perrin LaGriffe because I like the feel of the handle in the palm and also because I trained (during the Dark Ages) in a punching style and it works well with that. I own a Emerson LaGriffe for when I want to carry a flatter knife (the Perrin LaGriffe isn't as flat). My wife has a custom HAK and likes it a lot, carries it walking the dog, to the car at work - that sort of thing, along with a pepper spray. Not the end or be all of self-defense, but carrying them keeps her alert and provides some measure of protection. I don't see these knives, or the others mentioned here, as anything but a blade designed specifically for self-defense. That's what they were made for and are all serious tools. There are other, better EDC knives for around town and the woods. The Brous Silent Soldier is similar in design as you can see from the pictures. I also like the Dirk Pinkerton designed "BroadHead" http://dirkpinkerton.com/pview.php?pr=41 I handled one and got to speak with Pinkerton at BLADE - he knows his stuff and it's a good design. However, I don't collect self-defense knives and all of these are fairly redundant, relying on personal taste/training/intent and I am totally satisfied with the Perrin. That said, if you want one of them, get it and have fun and you can't go wrong with any of them for that!

So they arent good for edc tasks? (cutting letters, boxes, food, wood) I usually carry a knife with a very straight edge and find that those usually work the best for me, Im guessing the handle just isnt comfortable to work with? it looks like the blade lines up with the arm fairly well.

In one word....no. This is my opinion but there is alot of better knives suited for edc tasks. The HAK, LaGriffe, and Brous Are pretty much defensive use knifes and not the first choice for that. I do carry one on occasion, but would only use it to fight my way to a larger maore powerful weapon. If you want an edc in a fixed blade, there are many choices much better suited for the task.

hmm so i guess i try and snag a brkt city knife or essential... what small fixed blades do you guys usually carry inside your pocket? And one you can get a extremely secure grip. I love my scrapivore but i am looking for a more comfy handle without gaining too much bulk in my pocket. I thought the le griffe was it and i still might get one, though i must admit i was a little shellshocked at the price of custom 1095. but man do they look nice. It will be a tool, i dont have anything too nice to use, and if i dont use it someone else will!

slight - I make a single edge version of my BroadHead. It is great for daily tasks. I originally made it as a small survival knife. The shape of it lends itself quite well to the tasks normally done with a small blade. The other advantage, it can be lashed to a staff, stick or pole and used as a spear. I have received good reports about it in this role. I generally use S30V but, can use any steel.

This is the best pic I have right now. Will try to get a better one.
