Just want to hear from everyone else in Los Angeles about what good knife shops are here.

In Tarzana, Recon 1. They have all the major's and some customs too. Plaza Cutlery in Costa Mesa, excellent selection of manufacturers and customs. (Pricey though)

I can't think of one.

I have been to plaza cutlery and they have a nice selection. I have not been to Recon 1. I will have to go by soon.

Pretty sad. There might be a market for a nice knife shop out here thats up for grabs!!

Hope someone else chimes in with another one or two shops they know of.

Nice weather we're having today huh?
be safe,
mike

Martin B. Retting's in Culver City.

It's actually a gun store, but over the last few years has been developing into quite a nice knife shop. Lot's of production (Cold Steel, BM, Spydie, Reeve, Mad Dog, and Randall) and custom knives. Ask for Alex or Doug.

I too, like Recon-1. They carry nearly every production piece you can imagine. A few customs, too. A little overpriced, but hey, the guy has to pay for rent somehow! It's the shop I go to to see new knives when they're released. Bought a few there, too!!!

Oh, I'll be at Blade West for sure. Can hardly wait!

I agree that Retting has a pretty good selection. My two complaints are that the prices are high and they do not respond well to offers that are even a little bit below what the knives are marked. Unless you see something rare that you must have regardless of price, you may be disappointed in their pricing policy.

Ross Cutlery in L.A. 310 So. Broadway Phone number (213) 626-1897. Great selection of knives at decent prices. This is the place where O.J. bought his knife, I talked to the owner. Russ at Plaza Cutlery can sharpen a blade like no one else.

DPD, you're right, the guys at Retting's aren't very flexible with their pricing. Alex did cut me a deal on a Spydie once, though - but I think he did so only because he knew I spent a bunch of $$$ the week before buying a Sig!!!

You betcha I'm gonna be at Blade West!

Scott Dog:

Looks like Ross Cutlery may be located downtown. Am I right in that assumption? How is their custom knife selection?

I'll be at the Blade Show West also. I need to get a T-shirt before then. I will probably be there on Friday in the morning.
See you there,
Mike

....and thanks for the info on the shops.

Squid,

You're right about Ross Cutlery being downtown. It's near Bunker Hill and Angel's Flight.

I will be at the Bladeshow with a bladeforums tag on. I have been to Ross Cutlery. The owner is a very cool guy and they have a good selection of production and some customs. They have almost everything there. Has anyone been to Larry's Shaver Shop in Santa Monica on Wilshire by Lincoln. They have a good selection too.

Hey guys - when and where is the Blade Show West? Being here in So. Cal., I'd love to go.

PS: Eric - Love your cartoon!!

If you get a chance to travel north about an hour and a half, go to Nordic Knives in Solvang. It is very easy to find in the 6 square blocks or so that is downtown Solvang. They have a massive selection of Randalls and an excellent collection of custom knives. Plus the town is a hoot! It is modeled after a Dutch village with all kinds of stuff for the family.
Nordic knives also puts on the Solvang Knife Show on the last weekend of April every year. It is 60 tables of nothing but customs. The cream of the crop in the custom field. It is well worth attending. I had to miss this year's but will hitchhike to get there next year if I have to

Just came back from lunch. Took the chance to stop by Ross Cutlery as it is only about three or four blocks away. While there I met the proprietor, a very nice gentleman named Richard. He let me play with the knives even though he knew I wasn't in the market for a new toy as I just bought a Microtech LCC. Very knowledgeable and accomodating. Also told me that they provide a sharpening service. No electric contraptions, just good old fashioned, hand-powered on a whetstone. I smiled and told him that I like to sharpen my own knives.

On a side note, I asked him what lubricant he recommends for pocket knives. He said they use one made by Oster, the same company that makes hair clippers. It's called PREMIUM LUBRICATING OIL FOR CLIPPERS AND BLADES. The kicker is, he gave me a bottle as a present! Can you believe that? I know it's a small gesture, but it's the little things that count right? I think that I may just make my next knife purchase there, even though I can save a significant amount buying online. The customer service I received was simply first rate, even though I wasn't even a customer.

Kamagong,

I am on top of the hill above Angel's flight. Maybe I will see you in there at Ross Cutlery sometime. I had a great experience with Richard as well. He gave me a great tip. He said that his Gerber LST has so little metal on it that it passes through airport security undetected every time. Last time I went I bought an SAK because I felt bad not buying anything. I also got a Spydie Experimental there.

bigbass,

Where are you at? I also work on top of the hill above Angel's Flight. I'm located in the Well's Fargo building.

For you forumites in the San Gabriel Valley, there's Advance Cutlery in City of Industry, off the 60 Freeway and Azusa Ave. It's in Puente Hills mall, in the Sears wing. Selection isn't that great though.
