Labels, Ever read them?

I've got to admit I never thought the labels were ment to read. I've been taking a sleep aid, Melatonin pretty regularly. Actually more than I want to admit to help me sleep and it does work. Heck there only 3mg of Melatonin and it works. Some of you know I've been dealing with kidney stones for little over a week again, infact I passed this last one Friday. For some reason I decided to read the warning on the Melatonin. Was I surprized when I read: Do not take this product if you have had a history of kidney stones. It turns out each 3mg tablet of Melatonin is binded together with 112mg of calcium. Da...... Everytime I have taken a calcium suppliment what do I get? Kidney stones...... I'm going to sure miss taking the Melatonin and I'm hoping I can find it in another pill form with a binder my body can handle. I learned something last night and I'm sure I'm not the only one around that doesn't read labels. THERE THERE FOR A REASON!

We use the acronym "RTFM". ;)

Whenever they put me on a new drug I get the package insert from the pharmacist and carefully read everything. A mismatch some 10 years ago landed me in the hospital on telemetry with a crash cart next to my bed and a permanently messed up ticker. The doctor insisted it wasn't the cause. I went back on the drug and the symptoms started to come back as soon as the drug built up enough. This time though I quit before it did it's "magic" again. The friggin doctor actually said "who'd'a thunk it". Another mismatch gave me petit mal seizures for two days.

We have been misled into believing that doctors and pharmacy computer programs will keep us safe. Like sheep, they lie! ;) They do their best, but they are too busy and human physiology is too complex for them to be always correct in their decisions. :grumpy:

Not exactly the same situation as Ray, but the point is the same. It is incumbent upon us to RTFM about what we put in our bodies. Over-the-counter supplements often carry as much potential hazard as perscription drugs. I'm happy to hear you caught that, Ray, after the agony of that recent stone. Maybe it'll help prevent another.

I just took alook at the other medications I've been taking. Now I need to find another multiple vitamin without the calcium suppliment. Hopefully I'll remember over the years what I need to stay away from.

Yep. I try to read and understand whatever I take. Part of it is because of the weightlifting/bodybuilding stuff... but the biggest reason is my exgirlfriend being an RN.

She's told me all kinds of stories about people that will taken any pill, tablet, syrup you put in front of them without even wanting to know what it is/does.

I figure better safe than sorry.

Ray, sitting here on the porch I read the label on every can, until my eyes get blurry. :D I've come to the conclusion that the darn surgeon general has his nose in everything. :p
A couple good cold ones will help you sleep, until you have to get up and go pee. ;)
