Laguiole and Other French Folders...

Beautiful knives but too pricey for me to ever allow myself to use them.

I own a couple others in that price rangebut these are prettier than either of those and I probably wouldn't pry or scrape with either.

I actually want both the slippy and the not serious

I am hopelessly enamored. I can't stop looking at these guys. The designs and craftsmanship are just amazing.

I must start saving!

Hello Knife Nuts,

I've long been familiar with laguiole style knives and have always liked the sleek lines but never really gave them much more than a cursory once-over before moving on. I do like thin, slicey knives but for whatever reason, despite the initial attraction, these knives never kept my attention for long.

Then, during my interwebs travelling, I stumbled across this guy:

(I believe YouTube links are okay)

And I can't stop watching his videos or searching the internet and drooling over some of these absolutely beautiful knives!

From what I can find, the quality ones aren't cheap, or at least I'm too ignorant to know a solid performer at a reasonable cost. I seem to find a lot of what appears to be junk and then the high-end stuff. Not much in between. I also wince a little at the thought of dealing with a foreign country just because it seems like so much could get confused in communication. Probably dumb in this age though... And I doubt I'd ever really carry one of these but man are they just beautiful.

Anyway, that is about all I know about these guys and was just wondering if anyone shared my sentiments or if anyone can help educate me in any way.
I don't understand. You dont get your fix of elegance in an FRN-clad Delica? :-)

:)

In most all things I'm a function over form guy, but I still appreciate beauty and craftsmanship, especially in metal. That said though, there's very little functional compromise that I'm seeing.

I completely agree with you. My knife should work, and it should work well, and it should work without hotspots, and yet even with all of those constraints, I want it to look good, which is why I really don't like FRN even though I have several blades from Spyderco that are clad in it. It is just ugly as sin, as far as I am concerned.

For me, the absolute sweet spot of form and function coming together is epitomized by buying a Griptilian, taking off the awful stock scales, and paying somewhere between $100 and $175 for custom scales that feel great in the hand and that look beautiful.

Since this thread includes "other" French knives, I suggest checking out Chambriard. Beautiful, hand done (the file work design will depend on the craftsman since they have their own distinct style) and very functional. I own five different models (purchased from their US dealer who I cannot mention since he is not a member but a great guy to deal with) and each has arrived with excellent fit and finish. :D

I'll second this recommendation

In case you are interested in, I put up a Le Thiers in the pif thread in general which someone scooped up and then put back up. It's available and the thread is pretty cool so check it out!

Sorry but I don't know what the "pif thread" is...?

Eli - if you care to send me an email I can give you the link to an excellent US vendor of imported French knives. There might be others but these folks have served me very well. EMAIL HERE
