Laguiole Knives

It looks like no one actually owns the name "Laguiole", so there are several different companies producing Laguiole knives. It's not that the same knife costs more or less at a different site; they are different knives made by different companies with varying qualities.

I can't talk about the quality of each company or which offers the best value, but I'm suspicios of these knives generally. Some of the above posts said that Laguiole knives are low quality, yet their web sites boast of their extremely high quality.

For instance; Sandvick 12C27 isn't considered to be a bad steel, but it's certainly not a great steel, and saying that it's the best steel available today is ridiculous.

Similarly, shy away from knives that brag about their "440" steel. There are a few different types of 440 steel; 440C is a very good steel, while 440A is cheap. If a company says that their knives just have "440" steel, it is likely 440A. If it was 440C, they would say so.

Laguiole knives sure are pretty, and I may still buy one, but keep in mind that the US makes far and away the best pocket knives in the world. You really don't have to look farther than your own backyard.

If you are looking for some informations on different brands of laguiole knives just email me and i can tell you what i know. I live in germany but since i am collecting french pocket knives for nearly 20 years now, i know the french knife business quiet well and can give you the names of some good companies.

And cerulean,
to say that that the US makes far and away the best pocket knives in the world is just as ridiculous as saying that 12C27 is the best knife steel available. There is good ones and bad ones everywhere.

have a nice day,

Achim

Agree with others on this thread who say it's a nice-looking knife (slim and nice "lines"), but not in the top rank for usability, fit/finish, or quality of materials. Got a carving knife (they're best known for folders but make these as well) as a wedding present, which is nice looking for "table service with guests, etc. but not the preferred tool in the kitchen.
