Laguiole knives?

Forge de laguiole are probably the most common of the nicer manufacturers and they do good if not great work. I also really like the few Laguiole en Aubrac are a step up. My personal favorite Laguiole maker is Le Fidele, they're lower cost but usually very well made and its a family owned operation that goes back centuries. I'm definitely biased because I bought my first Laguiole on a school trip to France and it is a La Fidele.

The 3 companies named above are all quality shops making hand made laguiole knives in France. I recently visited a dealer in France and handled several from "Forge de Laguiole" and "Laguiole en Aubrac" as well as a production knife brand at about half the price. My favorite was Laguiole en Aubrac. They are great quality and one came home with me. It was my second laguiole and much better than my first one "made who knows where".

Definitively Fontenille Pataud because their quality the blade lock and the stop pin that prevents the edge from hitting the back spring.

I just received an Laguiole en Aubrac for Christmas and am extremely impressed with it.

I am not Will, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I think that is just the way they do their lock-back design. Instead of having a cut out in the frame/scale they extend the lock bar back to allow easy depression. I could be way off though.

Beautiful knife by the way.

Harry Thanks for your kind remarks. JStrange is right, the lockbar is the backspring and the bee is all one piece not welded. It's very comfortable in the hand and is easy to depress by squeezing the end. My photo might make it look uncomfortable or awkward, but, it's neither.

Quality and finish on these are remarkable and there are numerous options fot handles/finish, 3 types of steel and wait time is only about 3 weeks max

Here's my smooth bone Fontenille-Pataud with polished finish showing the filework/bee and backspring lock, which as I mentioned, is one solid forged piece no joins.

Thank you Sarah! It's nice they offer this option, I would like a matte blade and the rest polished but I haven't asked Gilles if he will do this. Their website in in French & English.

Here's another matte, this time in Horn. I rather regret I didn't specify blonde colour horn as I think it suits more, but well....

Harry Most kind of you! I gave one away, I think 4 now?? Here's another but the larger size in Ram's Horn, this too is a locker. F-P offer their knives as conventional backspring knives without the lockback for those who prefer it. They also offer a lot of scale choice and file-work options.

Don't know about favourite but the White Bone gets a lot of use as I like the way it takes on colour & age. A Lag feels very good in the hand which may surprise you when looking at the slender handle, thick scales help.

Many thanks, Will

Well I went to get my one and only to photograph and proudly display. IT'S GONE!!:confused::mad: I have took the house apart looking but nothing. My wife is a little upset at my "digging through everything" her words so I'm going to put things back and start a search and rescue mission tomorrow at first light. Seriously though I can't figure out what I could have done with it I am totally perplexed and truthfully a little upset. Losing a knife is bad enough but how the heck do you lose one you never carry and inside your house to boot. The good news is I bought it from that South American River site and only paid seems like around $50 for it but this is going to drive me nuts until I find it.

I just got a nice Laguiole. The maker is Arto.Pretty good looking knife for money with decent fit and finish. Also thin edge, cuts like crazy.

Arto is the new name of an old family owned cutlery, very good reputation. The new generation tries to update the old designs.

Very interesting, I'd like to hear more about your experiences with these Arto knives please.

Most Lags have a really fantastic slicer aspect and this is one of their many strengths.

'Arto' is a Finnish man's name...
