Laguiole

After having slept on it overnight, I think I answered my own question. I know I will butcher the spelling, but I think it is something like "navaja." Anyone agree that a navaja and a Laguiole are the same style?

I think you got the spelling. As i understand it, one theory is that the smaller french knife is in part based off of the older navaja (spanish) pattern, scaled down in size to be a bit more pocket able (as opposed to sash/belt carry) and a bit more "civilien" then the larger weapon/tool navaja.

I'm on a mini-quest for a navaja that is more the size of the laguiole, but a bit more spanish (I like the clip "bowie" type blade quite a bit). No luck so far in the states (at least not for anything of quality).

Maybe I'll just go french and pretend =)

hello,

was wondering if anyone could compare the quality of offeings from:

http://www.laguiole-elite.com/cgi-cs/cs.waframe.index?lang=1

http://www.fontenille-pataud.com/default.htm

i've ordered a standard model from laguiole-elite, and if i like it as much as i think i will, i plan on upgrading. are the fontenille-pataud's that much higher in quality? they certainly have a much greater selection of 'high end' models what with the liberal use of damascus and ivory.

thanks for your time,

Metis

If you're trying to run down a particular make of Laguiole (or any similar styles), a great place to see a huge selection of French, Spanish, and where ever else knives is http://www.cutlerytogo.com/.

I haven't done any business with them, so I cannot say one way or the other how they are to deal with, but it will take you a long while to see all the knives on their site.

Metis,

Going on the descriptions on their respective websites the only difference I can discern in comparable knives is that Pataud's cost more. ;)

thanks Don,

i came to about the same conclusion after much comparison, and opening about as many windows as my OS would let me.

after much debate i bought a custom 'sauvettere' by Guy Vialis at www.couteaux-courty.com.

it doesn't have the sweeping lines of a laguiole, but it has simplistic beauty and it's a limited edition made from (juniper for me) wood reclaimed from the storm that tore up Versailles Palace in '99. kind of sentimental for me, i wandered around the Versailles gardens a few times as a teenager.

Metis, I can vouch for the quality of the Fontenille-Pataud as I own 2, a Sheppard's and a Vendetta. They are completely hand made and in my opinion, a great value. Here's a link: www.worldknives.com Owner Chris Hyde is a great guy to deal with. For those who have only seen the "Supermarket" variety of a Laguiole knife, there is indeed a vast difference in quality. As in most cases, you get what you pay for.

Finding this post has been a lot of fun for me. Except for the part where I exposed my ignorance by thinking a Laguiole and a Navaja were the same knife!
Following all of the links on this post and viewing all of the beautiful Laguiole's has opened a whole new knife world for me.
Just what I need, a new knife world!

I'm a latecomer to this post, but I'll add that there are few knives that have as much 'SNAP' in closing than this one. I wanted to give it to my wife, but it's just too darn stiff. She'd lop her fingertip off someday!

This is the 'Colibri' (Hummingbird)

I love the artistic graceful way they shaped the knife to look like a small bird. So very creative and for just over a hundred or so dollars, it is about as much style for dollar as you can get!

I got it from cutlerytogo.com, and the Young's treated me real good. Sent it in a burlap gunnysak with a spritz of a scented bush. Very well-received. They get two thumbs up!
