You can find the history of the Laguiole knife here.
Or as it is told by one of the manufacturers here.

I can't get those links to work. Anyway beware. There's as many versions of this story as there are version of the origin of Wootz & Damascus Steel. Most are very interesting & many quite romantic and some contradictory. But all worth tracking down. David

I changed the links so hopefully they'll work now.
Thanks for the tip.

That's right.
Hence the reason for giving at least two (out of many available) histories for the Laguiole.

If looking for other Laguiole knives be exceptionally careful of a certain online auction site. There are many, many (perhaps the majority) of vendors there selling stuff that is not true Laguiole cutlery, but cheap Chinese knockoffs. Since the real thing is popular worldwide they have seen fit to come up with lots of copies. I almost got caught on one of these myself, after becoming familiar with the market. Very tricky folks out there.

About Richard Anselmo at laguiole.com .. ErikB, I had exactly the same experience.. received crap, returned it, Anselmo claims that he never received the knife.

Buy your laguiole knives elsewhere.
