Just got my Lahar, and my friend just got his mini-cyclone. I didn't realize how beefy the Lahar was. That is probably the widest 3.5" blade folder I've ever owned. In comparison to my BM 710, which is a slightly longer blade, the BM looks VERY small.

It came sharp. I won't say it was quite as sharp as I was expecting from all the posts saying the Lahar comes noticably sharper than other Kershaws, but it was plenty sharp enough for my needs.

It fits very nice in the hand, and the recurve blade is a pleasure to cut with. A good purchase indeed! The only thing I would think could challenge it, for me at least, is the little titanium frame lock mini-cyclone. But when you compare the price, I don't think the Lahar can be beat.

Thanks much guys!

I agree... my roommates got me one for my recent birthday. I was pleasantly surprised. The blade is so thick, yet it still slices like a champ. All of my Kershaw's so far have come sooo sharp out of the box.

definitely in the running for "best value" in it's class. Nice fit and finish typical of their stuff out of japan. My only criticism (which is often the case) is the clip. Not deep enough, and looks like it was picked up from another model. The VG10 blade is really the best feature, and if yours was not THAT sharp, just touch it up on the ceramic rods and if you know what you're doing, it will be hair-popping in just a few seconds.

Thanks for the heads up! I may have to blow even more money before the holidays.....

+1 to what OE said. VG10, great flipper great size, most definitely one of the best price/value products out there.
Mine was as sharp as any knife I've ever gotten from Kershaw(very sharp), but the real bonus is how effortless it was to make it even sharper, and I am a relative newbie to sharpening. Congrats on your purchase.

The Lahar looks like an amazing deal.

IIRC they are a limited run - if I was thinking of buying one, I'd do it sooner rather than later.

I just ordered a Lahar today. Saw one yesterday on a site and couldn't wait any longer.

I hope they're not a limited run. If I like mine as much as you guys like yours I may want another one before they stop making them.

The Lahar is definitely a nice knife. Last I heard, it is a regular production model, but made in relatively low volume. Hadn't heard if it continues to the 2008 line yet.

There is a lot of info and pics in this thread if anyone hasn't made up their minds.

My Lahar arrived today. It is exactly the size I wanted and it feels and looks perfect.

I do have one question, though, regarding the liner lock. How far over should the liner go to lock securely? It seems to be locked and has yet to fail, but it just looks like it should go farther. Any thoughts?

I have always been happy with the liner lock on the 1st 1/3 of the tang. You should find that the lock will wear in after a few hundred cycles.

Thanks A.P.F. That's about how far it goes on mine too. I've actually been sitting here opening and closing it repeatedly and it seems to be seating even better.

Man what a nice knife, especially for the price :)

Defiantly a lot of knife for the money. Wore it as my work EDC for a wile, and found it could take construction site abuse with no problems. The more I used it the smoother it operated. For a thick knife it carries pretty well in loose work jeans.

I heard & read alot of great stuff about this model so I just ordered one thanks for all the info & insight on it

The Lahar is my first Kershaw knife and I like it a lot. It is a very simple, no nonsense type of knife and, in my opinion, an incredible deal for the price. It's also very good looking in an understated type of way. Nothing flashy, just a darn good knife.

Let us know your thoughts when yours arrives :)

New to BF, just signed up officially (paid membership) and really enjoy it here. Just had to say that I just rec'd my Lahar and what a PIG!!! And that is a true compliment. I work construction and such outside on the Dakota plains where the weather can really beat you down. As with all our tools they have to be built to last and the Lahar fills the bill!!! You've got to be able to dig your folder out of your Carhartt's with gloves on and do it with ease. The blade is fantastic, the handle is it's equal and for $50.00 it's worth it at twice the price. Have been a long time Kershaw man and this just reinforces why. THANKS KERSHAW for a great tool.

I got my Lahar today and I'm impressed, especially for under $60. Beefy, well made, sharp and looks good too. I do have one question, the liner lock barely covers the left side of the back of the blade when engaged. I am used to liner locks going over more or less to the center. Is there a way to "adjust" the liner lock without screwing it up? Thanks

As I mentioned earlier, Muddog, you will find that the liner lock will move over to the right as it 'beds' in. Usually a hundred or so cycles will see an improvement. As always, YMMV.

Duh, APF, thanks for the info, guess I should learn to read the posts better. I'll flick it a 100 times or so in the next day or two. I'm still like a kid when I get a new knife. Thanks again
