Well I just got a Lahar in the mail today and wanted to write a super-quick review and post thoughts.

The Lahar is an incredible knife and very large with a beefy 3.25" VG-10 blade. I got this baby for only $35 and it feels and looks like a much pricier knife. It flips open very easily with just a slight roll of the wrist, and gives a satisfying click when it locks. It uses a liner lock, but has no blade play and it seems to be very strong and reliable. It has a nice weight to it and great balance and would make for a serious workhorse. The handle is very large and comfy for my biggish hands and there's even extra room at the pointed butt of it which could be used for less-than-lethal pressure points and whatnot.

I'd highly recommend this for anybody looking for a solid, hardworking knife.

It is more than a $35 knife. Even at full MSRP it's a bargain. I've often wondered why we don't hear/talk about it much more as it's a heck of a knife.

I guess it kind of gets lost amongst the excellence that is Kershaw. That's about the best way I can explain it. I love mine, but more often carry my Blur SG2, or S30V, or 13C26..... etc., etc. Or JYD's ( love that JYD2), or Leeks, .....

You get the picture. Enjoy your Lahar. Fine design, excellent engineering, top shelf materials....You know, Kershaw! Joe

It is one of my all time favorite knives. What's funny is I would pit it against any other knife I own as far as strength and durability, but when it comes to using a knife for the tough jobs I still only reach for a cheapy. Just can't bring myself into marring that finish! That is why I find myself sometimes carrying two knives: one to lend out if someone asks to borrow my knife, and the other (always a Kershaw) hidden in my fifth pocket just for me. If someone asks to borrow one of my Shaws, they receive a snarled, "No touchy!".

If you are into steel texture like me, stand in a dark room with the curtain open. Then hold you Lahar where you can look along the flat of the blade. I just love to see those little ripples! I can only achieve that if I quench my blades just right.

Yup the Lahar is a real sleeper. Not out in the spotlight much, but it is a hell of a knife for the money.

There was a pretty extensive thread about it a while back - here.

Sorry for digging up a month old thread, but I've got a confession to make. I've missed out on a great knife. It's been in it's box in the cabinet for a while now. When I first got it, I looked at it briefly, but my attention was focused on three other Kershaws that arrived the same day. So in the cabinet it went.

Well, for some reason I was rummaging around in there a few days ago, and I saw it and said what the heck, I'll spend some time with it. That was last Friday, and I haven't put it down yet.

For $ 50, the Lahar is a butt-load of knife! Even at $ 75, it's still a butt-load of knife! Like Joe said, it's a great knife even at MSRP. G-10, VG10, dual stainless liners and a very well machined lock interface should cost a lot more. The fit and finish are almost flawless, the edge is extremely sharp, and it feels good in my hand. It seems like you could beat on the blade like you would a rented mule. It's extremely stout, and a handful. Not only that, but its a fine looking knife, too! A few minutes messing with the flipper, and it snaps open each and every time, no wrist movement needed. If I could change one thing, it would be to extend the jimping down the spine another 1/4 inch or so. Other than that, perfect!

Anyone that has a little extra cash and wants a really great knife at a great price point, don't make the same mistake I did...get one now and stick it in your pocket. You will not regret the decision! I can't believe I havent noticed this knife before. My loss!

This one's going in the EDC case (once I decide to take it out of my pocket, which may be a while! :D) and will be carried often. Kudos to Kershaw for offering such a fantastic knife at a bargain price!

SPXTrader, I am in complete agreement with you. The Lahar is one of the best deals you will find in production knives.

I love mine, even if it feels just a tad heavy compared to some other Kershaws of comparable size. I am a fan of recurves though, so it often ends up in my front right pocket. VG-10 has always ranked pretty high on the scale for me, and the Lahar is built tank-tough.

Yeah, I guess I have to side with lazerboy on this one.....why the hell don't you guys talk about the Lahar more often?????? Y'all need to get with the program on this one, mkay? I wanna see pictures, I wanna read stories, personal anecdotes concerning the Lahar. Give me some visual evidence of the pure, unaduterated slicing destruction you've dished out with the Kershaw that was born of volcanoes!!!!!!:D

Ok, I'm done now. what a great knife.

Jon

Great knife. Had mine flat ground by a local balisong maker after my wife used it to open a can of beans when she couldn't find a can opener. Thats what happens when you lie about how much our "toys" are really worth. She thought it was a $5 knock-off knife.

It is a fantastic knife.. actually my favorite of all my Kershaws... at $35 I'd buy another 1 or 2.. Where are they listed for $35?

Lahar with AO and a Ti (or stainless with the G10 overlays) frame lock anyone? :D

So what if the street price is $ 100...that's the suggested MSRP on the knife now!

I wanna see more VG-10...

I highly doubt that we will ever see a Lahar with the AO. The SpeedSafe is Ken Onion's brainchild, and the Lahar is Tim Galyean's design. If I'm not mistaken, only Ken Onion's designs have ever featured the SpeedSafe. I guess you can never say never, but I would be shocked if an AO Lahar ever happened.

Now would be a great time to bring these two together for a collaboration! A Galyean Onion...I'd buy a few!

i had started a thread awhile, and i do mean awhile, back about a TI/VG-10 Lahar and how it would be a perfect companion to the TI/SG2 JYD2. actually i brought it up around the same time that the SG2 JYD2 came out.

TW said that the idea wasnt likely to happen, but i guess we could always ask*cough*bribe*cough* him if it would be a possible sprint run
