Going fishing for lake trout tomorrow...the lake I'm going does not allow the use of live bait any advice on lures???

Spoons - shiny silver ones - little cleo's, williams, cyclops.

Another thing works well. Cut the treble off a number 3 Mepps Aglia, add a split ring and worm hook. Texas rig a berkley bungy worm to the worm hook.

For lakers - make sure you bring a fish finder and go for structure! This time of year think in-shor near points with sudden drop offs. They are hammering away at the cyprinids before the heat of summer drives em deep. Good luck and mind the black flies!

rainbow powerbait or liberty powerbait #14 treble hook bass caster weight
18" from bottom attach 24" of fishing line with treble hook with powerbait on
works for crappie and small and big mouth bass too....

tyrantblade
good luck

i havent had much luck with powerbait.

i like the silver spoons. or rather the alpers have seemed to like them.

Another vote for spoons. Try trolling them behind you at a slow speed. Or jigging them vertically just off the bottom.

trout fisher how'd I guess you'd have some good input on this topic....leaving shortly thanks for the help guys.

don't forget 6" grubs on appropriate size jig heads. They are still probably shallow, so flatline troll spoons is probably still the best bet.

I am more of a stream trout fisherman, back country brook trout being my specialty. I have done enough lake trout fishing in the past to know what works.

What kind of gear do you typically use? Fly, spin, or pins? I'm trying to get more into stream trout fishing to bridge btw the spring steelies and the mid summer bass season.

I do both, fly and spin. It depends on the situation. For fly gear, I stick between a 7 and 9 foot 3-5 weight rod and DT floating line. For spinning its either a 4-1/2 UL or 6' ML, depending if I am in a canoe on a small Adirondack pond, or fishing a small creek or river.

May I ask what brand the 3 weight 7 footer? I want to do a conversion to a pin, but didn't want to drop a couple hundred on a Loomis/ sage blank. Just looking for a more affordable alternative.

well made it back alive....unfortunately the wind didn't lend itself to fishing in the lake... so I hiked in to a little beaver pond I know, and did a little fishing there with a little feathered grub w/a spinner...only got to fish for about an hour before thunder heads started to roll in across the valley so I got stepping pretty quickly, managed to pull in a nice 18 inch pike though.... I let him go, I'll be back for his daddy though and I'm bringing my frying pan, Thanks for all the help guys.

Get a spoon to their depth and you'll catch them. Last fall I fished lakers over a couple of shallow shoals in a lake that bottomed at 160 or so feet. I used very large yellow "five of diamonds" Len Thompson spoons. Daredevils are the same thing. Yellow with the five red diamonds on them. I had lakers fighting for my spoon. If one hit and twisted off another would come right in and nail it. Incredible fishing and those buggers can fight when they are 7-10 pounds. There is a long flap of clear jelly like fat on each side of the bady cavity. Clean that fat out or you will have crappy/greasy tasting laker. I cooked mine fresh, without the fat and it was simply clean fresh fish. Slightly bland actualy compared to other fish like walleye, from the far northern lake that I was at.

Its a St. Croix "imperial". St. Croix, Redington, Temple Fork Outfitters, and Cortland all make good affordable rods. I refuse to pay over $200 for any fishing rod. Its just not worth it in my book.
