Sorry about the bad photos.

I have another bar of raindrop pattern almost finished but I need more grinding discs first.

Thanks Phil, if you want this pattern for your bar I'm more than happy to send a piece to ya. :)
Its a really simple pattern to make Phil. Basically make a billet of 50 to 300 layers (I used 90) and forge it to the width you want and three times the thickness you want. You then drill 1/4" holes 1/3 of the way into the billet. Next you widen the tops of the holes with a larger drill bit (I used 1/2"). Once this is done you forge the bar flat wich forces the lower layers to the surface. Before you draw it into the final size you should take an angle grinder to the areas where the holes were because you will get a thin overlap from the bottoms of the holes being forced up. Once the over lap is taken care of you can forge it into the desired shape and finish as you see fit.

I started this bar with 5 layers of 1/4" 1084 and 4 layers of 1/8 15n20.

Thanks guys. I still have a lot to learn.

edit- BTW sam email me back about that san mai bar so I can make it some time this century. hehehe :)

Oh man that looks sweet! Now i just got to figure out what to do with that. Now I am nervous about making an unworthy knife. :D;) Thanks Dan.

Sure, I'd love it...or anything you do. You decide.

So are you drilling from both sides of the bar, or are you folding the drilled side over so it ends up on both sides? I notice the rain drop patterns vary

in width. Are you "counter" drilling with the 1/2" bit varying width? What density are you drilling the hole (how many and how close to each other)?

One more question. What are you doing to remove your scale, how are you sanding your bar and to what grit, and what etching are you doing to get your photos? I'm finding it a lot of work and am not getting very good pattern reveal.

I drill from both sides of the bar. There are patterns where you drill only one side and fold the bar. If I remember correctly this is how pool and eye is made, by drilling and folding multiple times.

I counter drilled about the same for all the holes. I did drill some of the holes to only 1/6 of the depth of the bar though to give it a bit of randomness. As for the density of the holes; I basically just start drilling holes randomly in the billet along the length. I then fill in the gaps with more holes but I try to leave about 1/8" between them so I don't overlap the holes. I'll make another bar and figure out the holes per inch ratio for you. :)

For removing scale and forging pits I use an angle grinder; scale eats though the 36 grit belts on my grinder so fast its not funny. I also prep the billet before the etch with the angle grinder, so its about 24 grit. For etching make sure you clean the bar first. I use acetone and paper towels. For my etching I use 50:50 vinegar and lemon juice for about 4 hours. Because the etching is so slow it really helps to create a great contrast.

Pancho; don't worry. As long as its to the best of your ability I will be extremely happy with the results.

I know tell me about it! I'm relatively new to the knife making world, and feel fortunate enough to use o1. I would never have dreamed in a million years I would be using steel of this beauty to make a knife. Thanks again Dan!

Well it took about forever for me to get all my ducks in a row. I've sent a bar of waterfall pattern out to Rjadoka yesterday. Pancho received a bar of raindrop a while back but since I've improved my methods I'll be sending him another bar. Phil, guitardemon, Francisco(do you prefer frank?), I'll be contacting the three of you over the next few days. I have a bar of waterfall pattern left and quite a few of firestorm.

To the winners, thank you for your patience. I really appreciate that you didn't hound me over the past 6 months.

For the next "Economic stimulus" I think we should do: Cash for the crazy old knife maker who bought too much 1084 and wants to sell it to Dan at insanely low prices. :D Too long? :D Hehehe

Wait... you can never have too much 1084, crap!

Wow! Dan! The Man! Another bar? Wow! I have the rain drop you sent me ground out and profiled and ready for HT. I am debating whether to add some filework or not. I will be sending it out for HT on monday. I finally got up enough nerve to do something with it. It is the first knife I profiled with the bader2 grinder I got from a friend. I hope it makes you proud. Thanks again!
