Landmann FireStarters.

I found these at my local Menards in the fireplace stuff the other day, 24 packets for $4.99.
Clean, non-toxic and waterproof and has a stated burn time of up to 10 minutes.

VERY lightweight, should be great for PSK's.

Weather conditions were clear but very windy.

Here is some shots for size, each packet is roughly a little larger than a sugar packet you find in a diner.

With a 84mm Wenger SAK.

With a common size paper matchbook.

At 8 minutes after lighting, it was still going strong, but the wind was beginning to blow burning pieces away, so I soaked it with water.
I believe it would have come close to the claimed 10 minutes.

I intended to try and light the contents of the package with a Blastmatch, thinking I would need to cut it open to expose the contents to the sparks, but I tried it first as it was, and to my suprise, on the third strike of the Blastmatch, sparks melted through the waterproof plastic coating and lit the contents.
(I put yellow tape on my Blastmatch to make it easier to find if dropped)

I tossed on some small kindling and away it went!

After soaking it again due to the wind picking up, I pulled the remainder of the second packet out of the fire, and was able to relight it with a match after being soaked.

These should be a great "tinder" for small lightweight kits!

Excellent! Can I put this in the wiki? If so, let me know how you'd like credit / if you'd like the page to link somewhere.

GOOD STUFF TLC.....errr.... BCCL.;):D

Those would fit nicely in my small Otter box with other kit.

I found some of these at my local Canadian Tire but my package says not to cook with the flame, even tough they say to use it for camping and BBQ starting. Does yours say the same? For things like boiling water and pan frying I guess it would be no big deal and I usually cook on coals anyways but it was interesting to note.

Hi Kris - I just grabbed some of these at my local Ace Hardware. The package says do not cook over the fire until the firestarter is fully consumed. So this is a starter, not a fuel.

Mine say the same as FLIX's, just wait until the starter is fully burned up, before cooking.

I also found these at Target today in the grill's and stuff, they were under the "Thermos" brand name, but I opened a box and looked and they are the exact same packets inside.

So what are they? I mean, does it say on the package what it's actually made from? Is it something like Esbit? I wonder about long term storage. Will it evaporate like Esbit?

Scott, the contents on the bag say " Aliphatic Hydrocarbons, Urea Based Resins & Parafins." They are a white powdery solid, that crumbles if flexed. Reminds me of the fuel tabs that come with the Gerber, except these are roughly 2"X2" and 1/4" thick.

Those look good. I'm always looking for new types of firestarters and tinder. I'll have to check around for those.

Excellent review and I really like the pictures.

For the longest time I simply carried a couple of those Cogland - fire starter sticks which seem like sawdust in paraffin wax. The look like brown pressboard sticks and are about 5" long. They work quite well and if you scrape the edge into a powder, it easily cataches a spark. I used this for many years and lighted sticks that were stored open for more than a year without a problem. The main draw back to them is that they are kind of crumbly and can break up in your kit when banged around and such.

Now I've secured some fatwood and will be sticking with this as my main tinder source. My wife did leave a couple of straws and pops in my truck this morning - so I think I'll try making some fire-straws with cotton/vaseline as a little extra backup.

I saw those yesterday at Sportsman's Warehouse. Thanks for the review. It seems like a good value for the money.
