I just ordered two diamond hones for my Lansky .My question is should I put oil on them?

I wondered too when I got mine. Wound up not putting anything on. I'll probably find out I was one stroke away from starting a fire without adding water or oil to them. lol

You don't need to, but you can if you want to. My Lansky diamond kit came with a bottle of oil, but I've never used it. I prefer to use water, or water with a little dish soap in it. That works just as well in keeping the swarf suspended, and is a lot easier to clean up afterwards (it is soap & water, after all ;)).

I use diamond hones dry and just wipe them on a rag once in a while during sharpening. Sorta like using a file.

+1, thats what I do with my Duo-folds.

I just got the diamond deluxe kit and in the directions it says not to use oil while sharpening and just use it afterwards to clean the hone. But, it also says that 15 degrees is only for xacto knives and razors so I am not sure what to make of it.

the lines in that guide are exactly that. guidelines. hell I use my Lansky hones like benchstones but travel sized. makes sharpening in the field and at home a lot easier

I recently got a coarse diamond stone to replace the coarse natural. I have just been putting a little spit on it with my finger before I start. Seems to work very well. I have always had to use a little oil on the coarse,(red holder), and the med.(green holder) stones. With fine,(blue holder), and ex. fine,(yellow holder), stones I use them dry. I rub a little spit on them and wipe off frequently. You can see the spit turn black as it cleans the stone. Works just fine and very simple. Once in a while I clean all the stone with hot water, Dawn, and a coarse dish scrubber. Mabey the acid in your spit helps to clean the stone. I dunno, works for me.

I do the same. I bought a fine and extra fine and keep in my campin kit. I was never any good at free-hand sharpening, but I can do a good job touching-up freehanding the Lansky stone. I cant seem to put blade to stone, but I can put stone to blade. Maby I'm dislectic that way.
