Just ordered a lansky kit and had a quick question for those of you that use it.
The sharpener will do angles 30, 25, 20 & 17.....My question is: is that total or per side?

My guess is that its per side. But its just a guess . I mean really, 17 total means like 8.5 per side. Seems a little ridiculous

Yeah it's per side, so inclusive angles are ~35*, 40*, 50*, 60*

Per side.

Due to the flat grind of RAT blades I spent more time trying to fix the "edge" my Lansky put on it than anything. Blade doesn't hold in the clamp well. Works good for small blades with a flat clamping surface.

Yea I made a trainwreck of my izula on a similar style gatco.

It slipped 2-3 times for me when I was pressing hard when reprofiling, but other than that it worked fine for me :dunno:

The Gatco clamp holds my RC-3 fine, but not the izula. I'm not all that thrilled with the system but it was on clearance at Cabelas. It is one of the best systems for sharpening old slip joints into lightsabers though, just doesn't seem to like FFG large blades.

Thinking about roughing up the contact surfaces on the clamp.

Use the long screw and tighten it first so that both clamps are flush against the blade. Then tighten the front screw. I know that is opposite from what the directions say but it eliminates the wobble. Verify your angles once you do it this way because you have changed the tilt angle of the clamps which throws off the slot angles.

 Thanks I'll definitely try that next time!

I have an RC-4 also and was looking into a sharpener. What is recommended? Kind of a new guy with sharpening..

ive had my lansky 10 years and no problems at all. i was wondering about those chefschoice electric ones, anybody use one of those

The problem with the clamp systems is the fact most rats are flat ground. Here's just no way to get a good even clamp. The systems are amazing for small saberground pocket knives. I've worn out two lansky systems and my gatco is near toast. I love them for that work. But for big knives and anything flat ground, I like the sharpmaker, and benchstones

chef choice is ok for someone to sharpen the kitchen knife but I would never use it on any other. For less money you can get a 1x30" belt sander with a a number of belts. Or mouse pad and sand paper. A friend bought a Kalamazoo 1x42 knife grinder for $219 shipped and it is a very nice grinder to sharpen with or to make your own knives. We went down from 600 grit to a 15 micron belt with very good results.

Well just received the lansky & tried it out.........So far not a fan, seems my old gatco did a MUCH better job.

Lansky is :thumbdn:. I tried to like it and have friends who use it very well. I just came to the conclusion that it was a piece of sh*t. I don't think the clamp ever held onto a knife long enough to sharpen the knife. Thicker blades, forget about it.
