Lansky Sharpeners

I have a question for you guys. I was thinking about getting the Lansky deluxe 5 stone kit.

Now i just want to get one of the diamond hones for re-profiling, which one do you suggest? the medium or coarse?

Thanks.

I used a medium for these jobs and, for the most part, it worked out fine. HOWEVER, it was barely enough to reprofile my ZT-0350 in S30V, and was considerably more worn when I finished that job. If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably get the the coarse, at least.

I use the extra coarse diamond stone just to get the angle I want for a new knife. I have worn out one and my second one is well "broken in" by a few small knives with "super" steel and a couple large Bussekin knives.

Can all of the Lansky kits sharpen serrated edged knives?

Would this be a good beginner/basic choice for a kit?

Lansky makes a dedicated hone for serrated edges (it's triangular, like the Sharpmaker rods). But that hone isn't normally included in the Deluxe kit you referenced. That kit is a decent one, but might be limited if trying to re-profile some of the 'super steels' like S30V (see earlier comments on this).

Regarding price/deals, it's against forum rules to post or discuss specific deals from vendors on products ('deal-spotting'). You might want to edit out the link in your post, to avoid getting infracted. Not being critical or judgmental, just a friendly heads-up.

Welcome to the forum. :)

In looking for a sharpener I considered the Lansky and the GATCO.

I settled on the GATCO and I am very happy with it. The GATCO Professional with an added ultra fine and an ultimate finishing hone.

The various rod-guided systems all work great.

Good Luck.

To help keep the rods aligned, Flatten a spot on the guide rods as suggested in a previous post, and also flatten the end of the thumb screws.

Thanks for the advice, don't know why I didn't think of that. Ill flatten those suckers down tomorrow and try it out.

lasnky is ok if your a newbie but for me, they stones just dont go high enuf and the edges you get just arnt up to snuff. if ya cant pass the HHT-4 or 5, its not good enuf for me. too much time, not good enuf results in the end.

even wiht that mod, there is too much slop in the holes and its nearly impossible to keep the exact same angle thru the different stones with the way the metal L brackets are held to the stones. even systems like the edge pro and wicked edge can be improved to get a better/more stable angle and those systems are lightyears ahead of the lansky.
