A couple members on Hoods Woods at Scott Gossmans campout last month, and Larry Nowicki (thanks to all), showed me how to make square and round lanyards. Now I have the bug bad. I've used every scrap available to me, and used about 60 feet over the weekend trying out different knots/lanyards etc. Funds are tight, but we can all dream with Christmas lists, right:D?

There are literally dozens of lanyard books out there, and I have no idea which one to start with. I have been to the different sites, on Youtube, been spending a lot of time on Stormdranes blog lately. Is there one all encompassing book for beginners? Other than the round and square knots, I have done some hiking staff knots, and been playing around with a knot for my water bottle.

Get your hands on a copy of A.B.O.K - (Ashley's Book of Knots).
Its not specific to lanyards, but it IS the bible of knots.
You cant go wrong by having it in your collection.
I also have a copy of "The Marlinspike Sailor". The drawings in this book of different knots and braids is outstanding. Well worth the 20 bucks

I have to say that I find Ashley's Book of Knots to be not that great.... Sure, it's the "bible", but it's got poor illustrations compared to modern books.

For a good general-purpose knot book, I recommend The Handbook of Knots by Des Pawson. It's got most of the knots you'll need, separated by use, and has excellent illustrations. Plus, it's only $11.56!

I kind of have to agree with FA. Although it has a wealth of knots for all different applications, learning how to tie some of them is very difficult. Having said that, I'm glad to have it on the shelf. Des Pawson's books are quite good as are Budworth's.

I find that in a book with nice big coloured pictures, it entices me to try the knots. Maybe I'm just a big kid and I like all the flash :o What am I saying, of course I am! :D

Anyway, I'm glad you started this thread, because I also would like to get a good book for lanyards. I have The Marlinspike Sailor and it's ok, but nothing special, IMHO. I also have Braid Craft, Donna M. Lightbody, Lothrop Lee & Shepard, 1976, ISBN# 0-688-41769-8 and Braiding & Knotting Techniques and Projects, Constantine A. Belash, Dover, 1974, ISBN# 0-486-23059-7. The former is nothing special, but the latter, I have still not finished checking out.

Anyway, I'm looking for more suggestions in this thread.

Something else I should have mentioned - there is an excellent website of free downloadable books, monographs, articles etc. on all manner of textile arts, including braids, weaving, netting, card weaving, basketmaking etc.

For those interested, it can be checked out here.
