I personally am not a huge fan of lanyards, fobs and the like and tend not to use them. That said I do use them when in a situation where loosing the knife is a real possibility, like on a boat, hiking up rivers, swimming etc. I have seen a few threads from people on lanyards and the lanyard pins provided by CRK with the knives. It seems there are some mixed feelings about them.
I think for me I have found the perfect set up to use when I do want a lanyard......
This is a stretchy coil lanyard I made for my Umnumzaan/Sebenza. It keeps neat and out the way when carried but gives enough stretch to use the knife for all but at full arms length. It's very easy to clip on and off as one desires. The lanyard pin can just be kept on the clip when not in use so it doesn't get misplaced. As long as you don't loose the lanyard that is.
I used a size 1 McGizmo clip for clipping to the lanyard pin and a size 3 for clipping on a belt loop or even just the lip of your pocket. The spring on the clip is too big to fit between the scales on the knife so that stops it from actually touching the point of the blade, as long as you clip it on the right way. The actual lanyard is made from some sort of hair band I stole from my other half. I used regular paracord to cover it and some electrical fittings for the loops on each end, they are crimped and epoxied in place and then covered with electrical shrink wrap stuff to clean up the finish.
I have been using this for a few months now and have been very happy with it. It's not ment to be load bearing or strong enough to hang off. It's just to stop the knife hitting the ground when dropped, because at times it can be a long way off or moving rather quickly.
