I personally am not a huge fan of lanyards, fobs and the like and tend not to use them. That said I do use them when in a situation where loosing the knife is a real possibility, like on a boat, hiking up rivers, swimming etc. I have seen a few threads from people on lanyards and the lanyard pins provided by CRK with the knives. It seems there are some mixed feelings about them.

I think for me I have found the perfect set up to use when I do want a lanyard......

This is a stretchy coil lanyard I made for my Umnumzaan/Sebenza. It keeps neat and out the way when carried but gives enough stretch to use the knife for all but at full arms length. It's very easy to clip on and off as one desires. The lanyard pin can just be kept on the clip when not in use so it doesn't get misplaced. As long as you don't loose the lanyard that is. :p

I used a size 1 McGizmo clip for clipping to the lanyard pin and a size 3 for clipping on a belt loop or even just the lip of your pocket. The spring on the clip is too big to fit between the scales on the knife so that stops it from actually touching the point of the blade, as long as you clip it on the right way. The actual lanyard is made from some sort of hair band I stole from my other half. I used regular paracord to cover it and some electrical fittings for the loops on each end, they are crimped and epoxied in place and then covered with electrical shrink wrap stuff to clean up the finish.

I have been using this for a few months now and have been very happy with it. It's not ment to be load bearing or strong enough to hang off. It's just to stop the knife hitting the ground when dropped, because at times it can be a long way off or moving rather quickly. :D:thumbup:

Nice! Im a little confused as to how you got the coil... but I like the design!

I like fobs/lanyards on my umnumzaan for something to grab when I pull it out of my pocket...

If you were selling those I would totally buy one ;)

The coil was from a hair band (bobble ?) that my girlfriend used to tie her hair back. It's made from a rubbery plastic that has good memory so it springs back to the coiled shape after being stretched. I pulled that through the outer part of the paracord using one of the inner strands. It's a bit tricky to do but once you have done a couple you get the technique down. :)

I'm not sure if she has any left, I have been sheepishly denying knowledge of the wearabouts of the 3 I've "borrowed" so far. :D

Ill second "Ill buy one" if you ever make another. Looks like it could be useful for many applications.

Why do you have an O-Ring on the Stand off in the back?

It matches the thumb studs and also makes the knife a bit softer if I place it down spine first, as I often do. I sometimes use glow in the dark o-rings but they wear out much faster.

+ 1 for me. I would take them off all my CRK's if not for using them for this very reason. Gives me much less chance of dropping it upon removal from my pocket!

Heck ya! It has a very cool functionality to it. It shows a lot of thought and attention to detail...just like a CRK.

Now that is a rocking idea, very well done Sir!
I'll third the " I'd buy one comment ", I think that you need to raid your ladies hair stuff closet and start selling these as you would quickly turn a tidy profit; maybe even enough to replace all of her hair bands ;D

Take care and thanks for sharing your great idea.

I would also buy one in a heartbeat

Looks great and now I will have to stop by Wally world before work tonight to see if I can make something similar to satisfy my curiosity :o

Inspired and Credits to haze for the concept, and bhyde for the awesome tool. Bought titanium clips and rings instead of stainless steel.

I've only had one mishap where i lost a knife in korea in a taxicab. It was clipped to my back pocket, and i guess it caught something on the rush out. I've never had a fall out of the pocket incident with a knife, with other objects yes. This definitely gives peace of mind for a rather high purchase item.
