The .308 and 30-06 factory loads are very similar, but the 30-06 walks away both in velocity and accuracy in hand loads. The larger case takes advantage of the great slow burning powders like IMR and H extruded varieties (4350, 4831 etc).
I also have a .270, but my preference is the 25-06. 100 grain bullets can be loaded up to the 3400 FPS range with 1/4-1/2 minute accuracy and for big animals like elk the 115 gr Nosler partition and the 117 gr Sierra Gamemaster SPBT are both impressive. It's good for a head shot out to 200 yards if the critter is not moving too fast.
Next week is Bambi season here and I will be gone for the whole time. A bad, wet, snowy day hunting beats most any other and the weather has been nice here all fall.
