Lanyard material?

What materials do you ladies and gents use for making your lanyards for spyderco sized hole in the pocket clip? I've found plenty of tutorials of HOW to make the lanyard and now I need to get my hands on some materials. The more household/stuff I can find at walmart/target or even lowes, the better...

Thanks all,
Phil

Hi

I really like Paracord, easy enough to find at your local Military/Surplus store. If the hole is really small (on the knive), I remove the inner threads. Even w/o the inner material it's doubtful you would break the lanyard.

Good Luck

The ones in these photos are cotton twine from the hardware store - dirt cheap and wears pretty well. Color selection is limited to white, but imagine it could be dyed with regular fabric dye.

Although I don't like lanyards on my folders, I found I do like them on my fixed blades. If you can find a Michaels Art Store near you, they sell a pound bag of leather lace for about $6.99.

Almost any Army Surplus store has paracord for cheap....usually 1 to 3 dollars for 50 to 100 ft piece...good luck

is that a custom ladybug?

Are you referring to the Burgandy Micarta Jester on his key ring?

Phil, you might check your local WalMart sporting goods section. Ours usually has Coleman brand utility cord in neon colors in the boating section. You can't rappel down a cliff with it, but it fits lanyard holes easily, holds knots well, is easy to work with and aids visibility should you drop the knife. Ours also has camo utility cord in the camping section, which is like a cheap imitation of paracord.

I found some thin leather lacing at a JoAnn Fabrics store. Don't know if that is in your area but if you like leather don't overlook ladies fabric stores.(yeah I felt silly in there but buying leather made it okay LOL.)

Parachute (550) cord is a standard for use. You can get it on line or at the Surplus store. Like the others said, for the Spyderco lanyard hole you need to take the inner strands out. The Walmart suggestion is another good one. There are also camping stores like REI and EMS that have different diameter of cord. Around where I live, Kmart has Wellington Sportsman's Cord, but some WalMart's have been known to stock them.

Use your imagination and look around wherever you go. You never know what you'll find.

Definitely get some 550 chute cord--the Sportsmans Guide has spools of it for maybe 15 bucks with shipping....it's GREAT STUFF!!

So this stuff is FOR SURE small enough to use on a Spyderco Native and even possibly the lanyard attachment for the SOG powerlock?
thanks for all the replies...I'm in psych class right now about to leave early to get me some paracord...

Let us know how it goes.

THE STUPID %&$(#@*%(@#*$(&^T surplus store had gone out of business...what the hell? I found it on google and all sorts of other searches...man this pisses me off...It was part of a drive that had started out just for that then my girlfriend and her two friends came and it evolved into a 7 stop trip all over akron (i'm at kent) which took 4 hours!!!!!! And no surplus store! GAH!!!!!!

I'll just order online...

Welcome to my world. The nearest surplus store is over 150 miles away. I order pretty much everything online.

I tend to use 550 paracord (all colors from countycom) or other paracord from REI. The 'cord fits most of my Spydies with the exception of the Kiwi (Deacon's twine idea looks like it will solve the problem).

Good sources for on line are Supply Captain and ubraidit.com . Lighthound also has many colors but I've never personally used them while I have used the other two. Countycomm has some but their color selection is limited. ubraidit.com sells a sample pack in which all their colors are for you to see. Others have managed to pick up cord on ebay in large quantities.

Otay! Just picked some up for 9.25 counting shipping (fleabay)...classy black...

pinstripe would be a nice new color...

On the ubraidit site i saw that one has to presoak paracord or somesuch silliness, because it will shrink...true? false?

i use either gutted std para cord or spectra cord myself the spectra is about what CRK and MT uses for fobs ..........

REI has some cord similar to the spectra bit its not available in black and i use black exclusively for my fobs, a "fob-snob" i suppose lol.

i like fobs on tip up folders to help draw from the pocket FWIW, also good on smaller folders to add some length to the handle.

True. I throw the whole shank of cord in some warm water for about 5-10 minutes then let it air dry while on a hanger.

It's not a bad idea. I threw about 68 inches of royal blue in the hot water and it measured about 56 inches after drying. Some people make the fob and shrink the completed fob. Supposedly it makes the fob tighter that way.
