Lanyard shackle material?

It looks to me like I have to replace a lanyard shackle (among other things) on this old Schrade. Brass would be easier, but all my existing shackles seem to be steel.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether brass would do?

I'm planning to put a pin through that extra hole and peen it over holes in a stirrup-shaped piece. (The last time I did this I was a kid and I just bent the ends of a piece of finish nail to fit into the holes.)

I love projects like this! I always try to match the bail to the bolster material. A little tip, pein one end of the pinstock before inserting it through the knife. If you have any specific questions about it or pinning feel free to ask away.

Thank you for the pre-peening tip (I never thought of that), and the offer of further info.
I'll try brass to match the bolsters, then.
