Lanyards, do you use one?

I have a Camillus/Becker BK7, and I have a lanyard (cheap chute cord) on it, mainly to keep it from flying out of my hand in use, when others are around.

Lanyards are cool, some of the ones I saw in the navy, made by boatswain mates, were downright amazing. I have no use for a fancy one on a knife though.

thx - cpr

+1 on everything schmitte said.

In addition to unnecessary lanyards, I also don't get the skull beads trend. Are we not grown men? Knives have enough stigma attached to them. Do they really need skulls dangling from them to add to it?

In a thread about skull beads, I suggested "Pamela Andserson Boob Beads" might be a better alternative, but no one took me seriously. Hey, I know I'd prefer them, even though I don't like lanyards on my knives or flashlights. I'd just glue them to the side of the blades.

{Excellent rant snipped for space reasons only.}
But hey, I'm generalizing here. Even I like big breasts.:)

As Dave Barry writes... " A man can not look at breasts and think rationally at the same time." I, too, enjoy not being able the think rationally from time to time. :D (Does it show?)

I also agree with Schmittie. I have laynards for a purpose, I use them on my work flashlights, on my boat knife, and combining it with a clip and attaching it to my belt loops when riding an ATV. When I am carrying them in a way that will probably not cause them to jar loose and lose them the lanyard goes bye-bye.

They do get in the way sometimes and I'd prefer to not have one, but I lose everything that's not tied to me. :(

One lanyard method that works especially well, a knife with the lanyard tied to the sheath. Slide knife out of sheath and have complete freedom of movement, snap knife back into sheath when done.

I do sometimes, it depends on the knife.

For my bushcraft knifes I don't unless I'm somewhere where something might snag the knife and pull it out the sheath.

But I always use them on gollocks and bigger choppers.

I got a useful tip off Lofty Wiseman's DVD. When I use a big chopper I don't put the lanyard around my wrist. I put it over my thumb and over the back of my hand. That way if it slips out my hand it always swings away from me. I gave it a try and found it a great tip......

....A couple of quick photos I just took for you:

I have enough cord to fit over a glove, but not enough to come off my thumb when I don't wear any.

Always.

On Folders, tere have been several times when a lanyard has helped me get a knife from my pocket (when I was working and bent in a strange position).

On Fixed blades I like em but if a knife doesn't have a Lanyard hole it will not prevent me from buying or carrying it.

A Pamela Anderson Boob Bead would make an excellent clickie switch on a flashlight. You could mod' a little tritium GITD insert into the nipple so when it's dark you'd know exactly where the sweet spot is...

Sorry.

I use one when I carry my Vic Super Tinker or Pioneer, just because it keeps the knife vertical in my pocket. It makes it much more comfortable to carry, and since I've had SAK's slide out of my pocket before, it adds a bit of extra security to keep it where it's supposed to be.

I had a lanyard on one of my knives, hated it, but I love to have one on my keys. I know that the skull beads are dorky and stupid but hey I like them, i'm not going to pay $200 for one probally not even $10, but hey it's my money and I can spend it however I would like to.

Like StuntDouble, I use a monkeyfist lanyard on my SAKs that slips under the belt and suspends the knife in the pocket, making it feel weightless and keeping it more accessible and down in the bottom of the pocket with my change.
I also like to use a leather lanyard with a large bead on my fixed blade EDCs -it allows me just enough room to slip my little finger through the loop so that I can let loose of the knife to climb or grab something quickly without losing the knife - a quick flip of the wrist brings the handle right back into your hand when ready.

I used to have a lanyard on a Delica I carried. It worked fine for a long time and added a tiny bit to the grip I felt.

Then once I went to open the blade and it caught on the Lanyard.

I the thing off and I havn't used one (on a folder) since.

Sorry.

Certainly nicer than a skull! Well... I would have, but my wife hinted that if I did, I might wake up in the morning missing the vital personal parts, so I've left my knives and flashlights un-modded. Much to my dismay. :(

But I still don't care for lanyards unless it's for a whistle or a stopwatch around my neck!

Hmmm... I didn't see StuntDouble's post, but this sounds like a useful idea! I've been using a pocket sheath to achieve the same thing and this monkey's fist idea would take up less room. I'll have to give it a try! However, my first thought is that it is something else that can get snagged as I walk past, but I'll try it and see how it works for me! Thanks for the ideas, guys!

LOL! I just realized... I've got small lanyards (3"-4") on both my cell phone and my e-book reader, and both have saved these items from a fall. Neither are loops; just single strand braided cord, and both are very thin, but I guess I do use lanyards. I still draw the line at skull beads!
