One other way to use a cord is a loop around the thumb, across the back of the hand, and then grip the handle.

If you make the loop with a sliding closure (rubber washer, pinch toggle, sliding Turk's head knot, etc), you can tighten and cinch down the loop around your hand by pulling on one of the ends.

I like a paracord lanyard with a tight loop arouind the wrist on a hunting knife to give better control when dressing an animal, especially elk. The lanyard is usually thrown away and replaced after each useage.

That's the only time I use them.
