On short folders I tie something on to give me a little more grip, and on my Opinel 10 I tied one on with a heavy bead that hangs out of my pocket and holds the knife upright (works well). But otherwise I find they just get in the way.

I dont mind a fob...hmmm...thats not true...per say. I have a fob on my starbenza, but i have no other folders with fobs. I go through a short spell where i think, ya, ill put a fob on my sebenza...then a week or two later i think, dang this freaking fob, and off it comes. So i guess i have a love/hate relationship with fobs. Really want to like them, but darn they are annoying. And so i go around and around in circles.
Also, sometimes i think it looks like a stray dreadlock hanging out of my pocket...like a little rosta doll is hiding in my pocket. I may go remove my fob now.

Some knives are good to grip in the back sometimes when you spreading some jam or butter or just because and for these times is cool to have a little extension. I like it on a delica for example. It's full grip but I like to be able to travel back a bit more and still have good control. And also as I don't have a clip on a delica its easier to fish it out of the pocket with a bit of a lanyard on.

If my knife has a bail, I hook it to my lanyard (not a fob).

I have no use for a fob. A lanyard, yes. A fob, not at all, at all.
I don't even have a fob on my keyring.

It's very specific to the knife for me. I rarely want any kind of lanyard on a knife, because I don't really want to draw attention to it.

They can be a fun arts-and-crafts kind of addition to the hobby, for sure, but the limited practical value + potential for unwanted attention had me dropping the practice fairly early on.

The only knife I have that has a lanyard-like thing on it is my Rough Rider trapper (bottom right of the terrible-quality hastily-taken indoor picture below)

I will say that the only knife I felt absolutely -needed- a lanyard was the Boker Gnome fixed blade. Teeny little handle.

I'm old and I drop things. I have finger lanyards on my users, both folders and fixed blades. They're just big enough to slip my little finger through them when I'm using the knife. When... not if... it slips away from me, it doesn't go far. It certainly doesn't end up stuck in my foot :).

When I was young on a fishing trip with my grand`dad, I asked him "Where`s the safest place to tie my lanyard ?" He answered "the anchor."
