Lanyards on knives

I find a lot of uses for a lanyard on a knife. Some knives don't really benefit from a lanyard but others do. My SAK Farmers have the glow pull lanyards that Secret77 sells on the exchange. These are good for adding a little more bulk and security to a folder.

On fixed blades I use the lanyard to hang the knife from a tree to dry it out...or if I need my hands for a bit and don't want to put a nasty knife in it's sheath. The other day I got the Schrade Hunter from Spooky. I opened the box in the truck and the knife slipped behind the seat. The lanyard was sticking out so I just pulled it out. So I guess if you dropped your knife between some rocks or something it would be easy to snag the lanyard with a stick.

I also like to put the lanyard around a firesteel loop to keep everything secure.

Anybody else have a use for lanyards...pros...cons?

You can see the lanyard on the Farmer.....I also put those glow in the dark zipper pulls from REI on just about everything.

I keep lanyars on everything that will take them...Particularly choppers..I was winter camping last years and a guy was chopping with a gerber axe while wearing gloves hep loaded up to take a swing, and the axe just fewl out of his hand and missed my head by about 2 inches..a lanyard loop over his wrist would've prevented that

Whoa that is beautiful wood on that firesteel. What blade is that?

I have a lanyard on the Fieldmaster I EDC. Just a simple Circle stitch OD/Black paracord number. I like the look and sometimes when my pockets are full of crap, it just adds something to grab onto when I am digging around.

great post B...

i have alway been a fan of lanyards too.. they serve many different uses.. they're perfect on smaller knives, to help extend the handle a bit..

I keep lanyards on everything. For all the reasonsyou listed. You are right about the hooking it if you drop it. Ive had to do this. I also have spotted mine when I set them down due to seein the bright lanyards.

I put lanyards on all of my fixed blades (and SAKs). Typically they are of a length to enhance retention while looped around my wrist, with two notable exceptions being my Huntsman SAK and my RC4. The Huntsman has a lanyard long enough for me to wear around my neck, and the RC4 has a very short lanyard that allows me to choke down on the handle for chopping advantage while looping the lanyard around my pinkie finger. If the description of the latter didn't translate well I will try to take a photo after work.

I am not a fan of lanyards except for large choppers, like my Machax for the same reason as Riley mentioned. I find they get in my way.

Just looked in my knife drawer and the only lanyards are on the Machax and 1of the 3 Vic SAK's I have.

I like lanyards for everything exept field dressing. They get really gross when they're covered in blood, fat and deer hair. I would like to buy some GITD cord ends but there is no way Im gonna pay $15 shipping for something that only cost 35 cents.

I'm not a big fan of lanyards. Even my choppers don't have them. I've seen a knife come back around on someone.... personally I'd rather have to try and find it than have it balistic and attached to my wrist. I know there are different ways of wearing them... Jwade makes knives with the layard in the center of the handle and I liked the feel of that the best... But I don't think I'd ever use one.

I put them on most of the knives I make with intentions to sell.

I have bright orange lanyards on most of my fixed blades. It's mainly for visibility, but I do hook them around my wrist when chopping.

My pocket folders without clips, i.e. SAKs, have lanyards that have snap rings on the end. I put the SAK in my pocket, and clip the lanyard to my belt loop. I once lost a SAK in the woods because it fell out of my pocket when I was climbing a tree. That won't happen again.

Tried a few but I don't have them on many things. I don't like the dangle on little stubby pull types, and lanyards proper that attach to something I usually find a pain. They've either got that length of gimpy key chain like business flapping around or else some phone cable type coil stuff or a retracting apparatus.

I do have them on SAKs, mainly because if the pouch rips open I'm not going to lose it. It also gives me something to bite on for that third hand thing. I also figure they are the ones I'm most likely to be using at full stretch, up a tree, or inside the workings of something. I just scrounge up those little lanyards people get bundled with el cheapo mobile phones, but never use. They are an ideal size for me and have that tiny Fastex type buckle thing that leaves only a couple of inches attached to the knife when you pop it open.

I like them on folders--I use them as retainers, to clip the folders into key clips in pouches and pockets (I've even sewed key clips into pant pockets), and slipped them around BDU buttons, all in a bid to keep them from falling out or being lost.

I put a paracord lanyard on just about everthing. if you need cordage for anything, like the bow for a bowdrill fire, you can then just remove the lanyard and use it for that purpos, replacing it when you are done.

I put lanyards on fixed blades that have pouch sheaths. I like knives to sit deep in a sheath, and without a lanyard they can sometimes be difficult to pull from the sheath.

never really liked lanyards, but i am getting into them a little.

i keep them on some of my big choppers, like machetes. when i am swinging a hatchet with winter gloves on, i wear a lanyard if i can (as per riley's story)

i also keep one on my water knives, like one of my SAKs and my modded bait knife.

i use a lanyard of sorts on my firesteel to tie a striker to it.

I like them on knives for pocket carry. Makes it easy to pulll the knife out. Forward lanyards on large fixed blades are the best. If you have a lanyard hole on the pommel end, properly wrapping it around your wrist/hand adds a measure of safety when chopping.

I have them on all my knives. I like them set-up like Bearthedog's older tutorial, where you catch the loop around your thumb, hang around wrist and grab the handle. This is a really secure way of holding the knife that prevents you from slipping up the handle if the lanyard is sized right. Also, when you let go of the knife it swings to the sides of your arms not into your arm.

As others have said, the lanyard is a great way of hanging the knife or pulling it. I often find that my hand in a blind search for the knife, even when on my belt, will often contact the lanyard first. For a small knife, the lanyard is also helpful for pulling it out of its kydex sheath with the handle is a bit small. I've also found myself sometimes in the situation when I'm separated from my bag, needing a piece of chord for something. Thats when the lanyard gets used. I've never used it for anything dramatic like a bow drill, just mundane thinngs like fixing a shoe lace or tying something in place that needed that one extra little lashing.

The only annoyance I find is the dirt and gunk factor as mentioned earlier. I just replace them frequently and use simple parachord for mine. One of the reasons I don't go for fancy knotting, other then I have little skill for it, is that I do tend to replace them regularly.

I like the look, but not when in use, I find its sangs for me. I usually just end up taking them off.
