Laptop Decision Help

Stay away from Dell. My company has nothing but issues from them. I bought one on a whim a couple of years ago. Bad idea. They have applications in the background that really whack up the BIOS. I would say 6 out of 10 Dells are crap.

When I asked my IT guy (an IT consultant who works by the hour) what to buy for a personal laptop, he strongly recommended Dell and said that he buys almost everything for our office from Dell. I asked him why he though Dell is better than other brands. His answer:

"Well the Dells break a lot, but their customer service is really great and they can get us new parts overnight."

in other words: "Dell is paying for my fishing boat."

He's now our ex-IT guy.

Back to the original poster: We've had a couple of laptops crap out on us from being moved around so much. The next time we buy new computers, we're going with a desktop system that doesn't move and a cheapo ultra portable netbook that's cheap and unlikely to break.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, and older HP (the thing weighs 20 pounds!) an Acer Extenza and a Sony Vaio. All have worked flawlessly. The Acer does most of the work now. It came very well set up (2.19, 3gb, 320 gb hd all with decent speed and all the bells and whistles) for $479. It came with Vista, which was immediately removed and re-loaded with XP Pro.

Before you buy used, take a look at www.newegg.com. Sign up for their email specials. I nabbed a $ 1400 Vaio last year for $ 999, on a 24 hour special deal.
