The Cold Steel Laredo Bowie is everything I hoped it would be. I won't bore you with a report on a knife you guys are already familiar with. BUT, I have one question.

What is the purpose of this tab on the sheath?

It's so that you can carry the sheath IWB or inside the belt. The stud hangs onto the belt edge / pants edge.

The primary advantage is that it's much easier to take on or off and it "floats" meaning if sit down the sheath can ride up - which is not possible if it was looped on your belt.

Hope that makes sense!

It makes perfect sense. Thanks for the reply. I thought it was a tab for a strap to hold the knife in place, but there is no such strap. The sheath is tight enough I don't think the knife coming out will be a problem.

A frog is the leather belt loop that buttons on to the stud, like on a sword or bayonet scabbard. You could have frog made for your scabbard, some bowies have/had them.

Otherwise, wear as Daniel suggests, that is a common method of wearing too.

:).

I can't legally carry the knife in Texas, and won't except for an acessory for CASS events, or if the balloon goes up, in which case, I'll strap on every Bowie I own since I will be one outnumbered white boy.

Great Knife!!!

I'm not sure if they corrected this but the ricasso had some really sharp points on it. They were starting to gouge the sheath so I smoothed them out. Also mine fit tight in the sheath so I cut out a piece of thin cardboard in the shape of the blade from the back of a note pad. I Inserted it into the sheath with the knife which streached it a little fits a hole lot better.

The knife cuts super nice.
Congrats :D :D

The sheath starts out being overly tight, but after wearing it for a couple of weeks, will loosen up to allow a good drawstroke without any other modifications. Modifying it before the breakin period will leave you with a sheath that is too loose after a while. The stud style sheath is an old time traditional carry and one that I favor for any blade over 7". Conceals exceptionally well!

Belt stud. Its to keep the sheath from falling through, when its tucked inside your belt. Its also for a belt frog, which cold steel doesnt make for it. But, if your like me, you make your own :)

How could it happen that a Texan cannot carry a Bowie?? Freedom is such a prescious thing I would think that Texas would have held out. We can still carry one in Wyoming, guess we are amoung the last of the land of the free!

I wish I could argue with you, butI can't. State law prohibits possession of a knife with a blade more than five and a half inches long, except under very limited circumstances, and if I remember right, specifically prohibts possession of a Bowie knife or a dagger in public.

I spent a night in the Lew Sterret Justice Center in Dallas for violating that law back in the mid 80s.

I gotta wonder who that Dallas PD officer was protecting when he arrested me for having a butcher knife I used to open the broken lock on my car trunk.

Come to think of it, that knife could have qualifed as Bowie under some definitions.

You were what some call a sitting duck. Easy to catch and good for the arrest record of the officer. It is tough to catch real bad guys, but sitting ducks do stuff without trying to hide it, in other words without criminal intent.
Sitting ducks are easy to catch cause they don't know what they are doing that is unlawful. Sitting ducks don't fight back, all too often plead guilty and again make for good numbers for the department. Some even plead guilty, are fined and later find out that the law they were charged with did not exist.

I was a cop for 12 years, when folks started talking about gun control I asked other officers in the department if they would participate in confiscation of firearms if they became illegal. Out of 79 officers, all but one said yes!

I knew I was in the wrong crowd.

Big Ugly Tall Texan, I lived in El Paso for a few years. My wife grew up in El Paso. I just noticed that's where you live. As I recall the Texas law, you'd be allowed to carry that bowie while engaged in a pursuit for which such a knife would be appropriate. I can't swear that is a direct quote of the law, but it goes something like that. Or at least it used to. So that would mean that you should be able to carry your bowie when camping or hunting. Not that there's much to hunt around El Paso except rattlesnakes and jackrabbits.

Wow. really sad state of affairs y'all are talkin', especially with Mr. Fowlers last post.

Damn I love living in Alaska....

Ed, I'm curious, where were you in law enforcement at? Around here in this part of Texas, you would have a hard time finding one officer that would willingly participate in weapon confiscation.
