Laredo Bowie in 4034 Stainless

For the price they have that 4034 listed for on that vendor's website, ($260'ish), one might be better off seeking a NIB SK-5 or O1 version on the secondary market.

The knife on the top of the following picture, is the O1 carbon steel Laredo Bowie knife I acquired online last week from a vendor, (still had it NIB). It ran me $259 + s/h & tax.
So, it was literally at the same price point as the 4034 stainless steel version being discussed here.

Although I'm happy with my purchase, I wasn't totally ecstatic about having paid what I did for it. But, I do realize that it is NIB, and is a discontinued item, so the market will reflect that, (not to mention EVERYTHING creeping up in cost).
Actually, considering how much the 4034 version is going for, I'm now thinking I may have gotten a bit of a bargain, considering these current real world market situations.
I imagine that similar scores can still be obtained with a little seeking out and patience 👍
Good luck to anyone that may be on the hunt for some "Old Steel" 😊

Seriously? $260-ish for a 4034ss knife? If that is legitimate, then that’s nuts. 4034 is a budget steel.

I thought that the use by CS of 4034 was given up on , for the BAK's ?

To put this steel in the CS flagship knives is brand suicide , so sure hope it's not happening .:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Cold Steel™ Warcraft Fixed Blade 13SSB Knife 4034 Stainless Steel Black GFN

Handcrafted in Taiwan
SKU CS13SSB FIXBLADE WARCR...

$115 free standard shipping (from a dealer I don't know ) . https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/deadwood-knives.754858/

This is the 12" OAL Warcraft .
its 5mm thick so thats good for a big chopper, and lower cost, but 4034......on a warcraft.

not sure I'm liking that. think illl wait for reviews first on it.

The Kukri is already available in 4034 and not directly from Cold Steel. It is physically in stock already though. It is priced around $250 I believe -just speaking of 4034
Edit- apologies someone already mentioned this up thread

Yeah , I don't know about 4034 in this kind of application .

I'd love to see a fair , head to head , of this 4034 vs 3V in same sized , 12" Warcraft . Hard use , destruct testing .

I didn't pay too much more for my 3V , so I really can't be too thrilled about this offering .

Edit to ad pics :

That’s insane, man. For half that price, one can get a quality 5160 kukri from Kailash. 4034 is a budget steel, plain and simple.

I was just thinking something about the Laredo... I know Lynn's Cold Steel went with the Cable Tang Construction, but now with CS being under new ownership, well... Maybe they could try something different.
Many folks have been firmly on the side of criticizing the Laredo and Natchez Bowie for their cable tang construction method. Many folks have hoped that maybe CS would offer a version using a tang that is more like the one used in the Trail Master.
Again, this was something that Lynn Thompson never did, but the design would not need drastic alteration to incorporate it in.

I know, zero to slim chance on that ever happening 😆

I’ll keep an open mind, but it would’ve been nicer if they got SK5 instead for the budget route.

Cold Steel's already used SK5 as its budget steel. I understand your point, but if the company is moving into 4034 instead, it's because of a change in price, availability, performance, or some combination of the three.

I don't care what Internet "experts" say. If Andrew Demko claims that testing of Cold Steel's version of 4034 was yielding surprisingly good results (results beyond what they ever expected), I believe him. Steel sourcing and treatment can make a big difference. A.G. Russell bought the remaining stock of Carbon V when Camillus went bankrupt and could have used it however he wished. But he specifically sought out Dan Maragni to oversee its treatment when he wanted to coax Cold Steel-level performance from it for his own knives.

I may be guilty of it myself sometimes, but I truly think it's a mistake when people look at the steel used in a knife and think it will perform universally, no matter the source. D2 in a Chinese knife is NOT the same as D2 in a Benchmade, which still is NOT the same as D2 in a Bob Dozier.

I don't intend to replicate everything I have in new 4034 models. But I'd be willing to look at competitively priced Warcrafts, Laredos, and Natchezes in that steel, provided that there are videos of Cold Steel testing them to prove their performance.

If that is the customer price, the 4034 Warcraft Tantos are in the same price range as the 1095 Cro-Van Beckers BK7.

That is a bit pricey for what you get, unless you really want a wide tanto in that size and don't want one from TOPS or if you really like Secure-Ex sheaths.

I'm waiting to see some really hard use type videos of these BAK's in 4034 .

Maybe they will do great service , but I suspect not . :(

I agree. Tri-Ad locks are still king, but for fixed blade needs, I’ll start looking elsewhere.
