Large blade knife - suggestions

Rock6, I have to ditto what Tknife said.... you have a very nice array of tools to choose from. Who makes the hacket in the upper left of your second picture? Pretty cool looking. I cant agree with you more, good tools make the job go quicker, safer, and easier. But I really cant bring all this stuff due to my two pocket restriction. Try jamming a saw, axe, poncho, two types of pocket knives ,etc into your two back pockets..... it just does not fit. Now I have to admit, I am looking at bringing along two knives in the future due to the advice from you guys and a buddy. I am also thinking of bring a cup and canteen too. I'm not sure if its old age or what, but I am thinking about bring more items than I have been doing since '67. At this point though I am just looking at knives.

At the front of my canidate list is the Swamp Rat battle rat or camp tramp or a Busse battle mistress. At the moment the second knife looks like it may be a Ranger shank. The jury is still out....so many fine knives out there and so much to learn.

That DMT double sharpener looks to be good one for the field. The one that has a butterfly knife type of handles. Thanks for the info! What size course would be good for sharpening a Busse or Swamp Rat....fine and extra fine?

Skammer, I agree with you about not using your main blade as a spearhead except for one thing. The only time I see myself using my knife as a spearhead is to ambush hogs or maybe deer. In this case, the spear is used in a jabbing motion rather than a normal spear in which you throw it at something. It is poked into the hogs vitals. While a fire hardened stick spear works, it would make a cleaner and quicker kill with a long bladed knife.

One big blade?
How about a Bark River Evolution 1?

AG Russell has some left, last time I checked.
Comes with Kydex and 3 sets of handle scales.

Rock,

Man you must be rich! My collection is a bit smaller. :(

Why so many of the same utility?

Skam

No, just well invested in guns, knives and backpacking/BoB gear :D It's been an ongoing collection for several years and a big hobby...I just have a hard time getting rid of stuff :D From National Guard to college to over 12 years Active Duty Army...just a "green collar" employee :)...just keep paying your taxes :D

riverotter, for a 9" blade, I'd really consider the SRKW Battle Rat, Ranger Knive's RD9 or even the Becker BK9...all a good investement for the money.

Please don't tempt me Ebbtide! That EVO1 has been calling my name for a while, I just can't justify getting it other than it would be a great addition to the family :D

Thanks for the info. Did you design it? I like the design alot, and he does some very nice work. Your site is great too, you've been on some great training classes.

Tknife,

Thanks for the nice comments, Roger and I have worked on several knife projects. I guess we both put in ideas for the designs. As for survival coarses, I just finished a Tom Brown Standard course and liked it so much I already signed up for his Back-to-back class (Advanced Survival and Tracking.) :D

ROCK6, who makes that hachet in the upper left hand corner of your second picture?

Thatmguy, email sent....

Tknife, thanks for the info. I was refering to the axe on the other side of the picture. The one with the S-shaped handle. Do you know what that one is?

I'm pretty sure that's a Firestone belt axe. I don't know why I thought you said right side!

It's well made, and I like the design, but I would choose a GB over it. It costs about $120, for half that you could get a GB hatchet, and IMHO the GB's are the best.
I've had several different hatchets, but found the hatchet and the Mini to be my favorite.

tknife is correct it's the Firestone belt axe...a great little axe that I take hunting. The best thing (other than the looks :D ) is the belt sheath. That was the template I sent Dwayne at Armoralleather for my Wildlife hatchet. It's drop-forged 440...which is interesting...I haven't had it chip yet and it's chopped a little wood and cut through the leg-bone of a deer.

Thanks for the compliment Myakka, I must say, you've shown us some really nice blades as well...

Thanks Rock6 and Tknife, I do like the looks of that hachet. It looks like it would be a good skinner too, especially if you could get the head on and off with ease.
Do you think one could fashion a slip though handle for it? Or is the hole not confiqured well enough for that. Doesnt look like it has any type of poll, so I dont suppose you could use it as a hammer.

riverotter, the Firestone has the head pinned on both from the back and side...very stout arrangement. I don't think you'd get it off very easily :D I will say, you can choke up on it really well for skinning and it's like the Wildlife in that it can take a great edge. I guess you could use in as a hammer in a pinch, but the only one of the three pictured would be the Roselli for hammering if needed.

ROCK6

The poll seems really small, but Roselli stated that it could be used for hammering. Don't think I would try and break bricks with it, but for tent stakes, I would feel confident.
