Here is my first for sale here on bladeforums. It is intended to be a sturdy user.

sold delivered if in the continental US.

The steel was part of a leaf spring from a 1940 Ford used for transporting moonshine. I have been treating the steel from this piece as though it is 5160, with good results. It is flexable, tough, and holds a nice edge.

Overall size is just under 12". The blade is just under 7" long and a little over 1.5" wide.

The handles are green canvas micarta, the fittings are stainless steel, and the sheath is leather.

This will make a versatile, dependable hiking/camping/outdoors comanion for someone.

Chris

Nice knife Chris. It does look like a real heavy duty user.
Whats the blade thickness on that beauty?

welcome aboard CMD. Good looking working tool you built even if it has a sordid history. You are going to like it here! Lots of good interaction between makers and collectors. A great place to try out new designs and models. Were else can you get 500 to 1000 people looking at your work within a weeks time?

Thank you Mark, the thickness is 3/16" in the handle and slightly less (still more the 1/8") at the spine from there to the false edge on the top.

It is flat ground except for the false edge area which is hollow ground on a 10" wheel.

Thanks G L Drew, I'm happy to finally be able to "take the plunge".

Remember that it was the demand for all of that top quality moonshine from places like Asheville :) that led to stock car racing.

Oh, I forgot to ask, Whats the finish on it?

The finish was done by going to 400 grit with belts, then hand rubbed with 800 against the grain, then lightly again with a worn 220, then buffing. Not sure what to call that but it is smooth and bright and becomes a nice gentle fade pattern as the blade is used and ages.

I should also mention that it was forged to a general shape then slowly/carefully refined with stock removal on my KMG.

The heat treat was done with a 2 stage quenching into real quenchant then drawing in my Evenheat.

Very fun...

The final cutting edge was finished with a sharpmaker followed by stropping. I'm keeping a few pieces of this steel for myself!

The sheath is ugly but it is sturdy and fits the knife nice and tight. It is made from some very thick vegetable tanned leather.

New maker... mystery steel... ugly sheath... Let's see if this price helps. It really is a good knife.

Thank you for the kind words Mark. I hope this knife will be as much of a pleasure to own and use as it was to make.
