Both knifes are 5160 steel from an American foundry up North. The stuff is being used for military applications. It is oil quenched from critical temp and tempered out at 400 degrees to achieve a hardness around 57-59. The woods are local to Ohio and come from an Mill north of me and are dried in my buddy's kiln before being sent out to WSSI for stabilizing. This is a cherry burl, irregular cell growth within the burl results in burl wood having intertwined - twisted grain and in some species [particularly black ash] “eyes”. I am an avid Indian artifact "hunter" and spend may hours walking the plowed fields of rural Ohio looking for pieces. This love of artifacts inspired the tooling on both leather sheaths.

This is the information I received from Burton. I wish more makers would let us collectors in on their inspiration when making a knife with exotic wood. Not all knives tell a story, but when they do it makes it more special to the person receiving the knife. Both of these knives will be used as gifts and will be used and appreciated, along with all my knives.
